Overview

Pala Municipality is the municipal government of Pala, a town in the Meenachil taluk of Kottayam district in the Indian state of Kerala. The town lies on the banks of the Meenachil River, which flows east to west through its centre, with the main urban core on the northern bank. The municipality shares borders with the gram panchayats of Karoor, Bharananganam, Meenachil and Mutholi. As a local self-government body, it is responsible for civic administration, infrastructure, sanitation, and public services within its jurisdiction. The municipality is part of the Pala Assembly constituency and the Meenachil taluk. Pala has historical significance, with the region once forming part of the ancient kingdoms of Thekkumkur, Vadakkumkur and Poonjar. The town developed as a trading centre, and the Meenachil River historically facilitated commerce with Alappuzha. The municipality oversees a town with a rich educational and cultural heritage, including St. Thomas College and various religious institutions. Its official website is palamunicipality.in.

History

The region encompassing Pala was historically part of the ancient kingdoms of Thekkumkur, Vadakkumkur and Poonjar. The town of Pala itself developed as a significant settlement in the Meenachil taluk. One of the oldest roads in the Pala urban area is the M.P. Road (Muvattupuzha–Punalur road). In earlier times, Pala had commercial relations with Alappuzha via the Meenachil River. The name 'Pala' is believed by some to derive from 'Palazhi', an old name for the Meenachil River, while another belief attributes it to Palathu Chettiyar, who established the market. Educational institutions began to appear in the late 19th and early 20th centuries: St. Thomas School was established in 1896 at St. Thomas Church, and was upgraded to a high school in 1921. Another school started in 1909 under the leadership of the Kannadiyurumpu Math and was upgraded to a middle school in 1921. Over time, Pala grew into a municipal town with various temples, churches, and a mosque, and is associated with notable personalities such as Mahakavi Pala Narayanan Nair, Mahakavi Kattakkayathil Cheriyan Mappillai, K.M. Mani, and Vettur Raman Nair. Today, Pala Municipality administers the town and its civic services.
