Overview

Pacific Bondi Beach is an indoor and outdoor shopping and hospitality complex on Campbell Parade, opposite Bondi Beach in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney, New South Wales. The development combines retail, dining, hotel accommodation and residential apartments in a prominent beachside location. Its facilities also include customer parking and public-transport connections to Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs and nearby neighbourhoods. The site was originally occupied by an abandoned service station. A building known as the Swiss Grand Hotel was subsequently developed there in the 1980s. Before the later redevelopment, the Swiss Grand Hotel complex contained 13 stores and became associated with the early history of Bondi Pizza, which was founded at the site in 2009. In 2007, the building and its management were acquired for an undisclosed amount with a longer-term redevelopment planned. Construction began in 2013, requiring the closure of the 13 existing stores and the demolition of the Swiss Grand Hotel structure. The replacement project was completed in 2015 under the Pacific Bondi Beach name. The completed development included a new QT Hotel with 69 rooms and 112 residential apartments, alongside retail and food-and-beverage space. The centre’s retail offer expanded in late 2015 and early 2016. Saturdays Surf NYC opened its first Australian flagship store at the development on 21 November 2015. Woolworths Metro, BWS and other retailers began operating there in early 2016. The combination of international and Australian retail, restaurants, hospitality and residential uses reflects the development’s positioning as a lifestyle-oriented destination serving both local residents and visitors to Bondi Beach. Pacific Bondi Beach received the Urban Taskforce Award for Development of the Year in 2016. The complex is served by Transdev John Holland bus routes connecting Bondi Beach with surrounding suburbs and has a car park with 150 spaces.

History

The Pacific Bondi Beach site is located on Campbell Parade opposite Bondi Beach in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs. Before the present complex was built, the land had been occupied by an abandoned service station. A building known as the Swiss Grand Hotel was developed on the site during the 1980s and incorporated a small retail component of 13 stores. The Swiss Grand Hotel complex also has a connection with Bondi Pizza, whose first site was established there in 2009. In 2007, the building and its management were acquired for an undisclosed amount as part of plans for a substantial redevelopment. The redevelopment did not simply refurbish the existing property: construction began in 2013, the 13 existing stores closed, and the Swiss Grand Hotel was demolished. The replacement development was completed in 2015 as Pacific Bondi Beach. Its mixed-use design added retail and dining space, a new QT Hotel with 69 rooms, and 112 residential apartments. The project therefore changed the site from a hotel with a limited retail component into a larger lifestyle and hospitality destination integrating commercial, tourism and residential uses. Retail activation continued after the physical completion of the project. Saturdays Surf NYC opened its first Australian flagship store at Pacific Bondi Beach on 21 November 2015. Woolworths Metro, BWS and other retailers opened in early 2016, broadening the centre’s offer beyond destination fashion and surf retail to include convenience grocery, liquor and other everyday services. The centre is accessible by Transdev John Holland bus connections serving Bondi Beach, the Eastern Suburbs and surrounding suburbs. It also provides a 150-space car park. In 2016, Pacific Bondi Beach was recognised by the Urban Taskforce with its Development of the Year award. Publicly available reference material identifies the site’s development history and tenants but does not establish the current owner, operating company, executive leadership or a dedicated corporate website.
