Overview
P2 Die Zweite Post GmbH & Co. KG, commonly known as P2, is a German cooperative network of private postal service providers headquartered in Mörfelden-Walldorf. It was founded in 2007 by nine southwest German publishing houses as a cooperation of their delivery companies, with operations beginning in early 2008. The majority of its shareholders are affiliated with Südwestdeutsche Medien Holding or the closely linked Medien Union. The general partner is P2 Brief+Paket Beteiligungs GmbH. P2 positions itself as an independent, professionally organized delivery network and a strong alternative in the German postal market. It bundles regional market leaders into a centrally managed national infrastructure. According to its official website, the network processes around 60 million items per month and serves over 50,000 customers, with approximately 55,000 employees across the entire association. P2 emphasizes scalable, economical, and strategically managed postal solutions for businesses with medium to high shipping volumes, combining regional excellence with central coordination. By the end of 2008, the P2 network already included more than 20 regional postal service providers, enabling nationwide and worldwide letter delivery. The company claims to cover around 50 percent of German households through its partners. In 2012, the network reported 45,000 employees and approximately 50,000 customers. P2 has also issued nationwide stamps, notably after the insolvency of the PIN Group, marking a first for a private postal company in Germany. The network includes numerous regional delivery companies, many of which are subsidiaries of local newspaper publishers. Examples include BWPOST in Stuttgart, MZZ Briefdienst in Halle (Saale), VDL Sachsen Holding in Chemnitz, Nordkurier in Neubrandenburg, and Citipost in Hannover. Some former members have left the network, such as Annen Post, Der Lünebote, WAZ Post Service, Elbkurier, Rheinkurier, and Regio Post Pfalz. Key competitors include Deutsche Post AG and the former shareholders of the insolvent PIN Group and Xanto.
History
P2 Die Zweite Post GmbH & Co. KG was founded in 2007 by nine southwest German publishing houses as a cooperation of their delivery companies. The general partner is P2 Brief+Paket Beteiligungs GmbH. The majority of the shareholders belong to Südwestdeutsche Medien Holding or the closely linked Medien Union. Business operations began in early 2008. By the end of 2008, the P2 network, consisting of shareholders and additional contract partners, already included more than 20 regional postal service providers. Through this network, P2 delivers letters nationwide and worldwide. According to its own statements, P2 and its partners cover around 50 percent of German households. In September 2009, it became known that the Dutch TNT Post was negotiating a cooperation with P2 and with Citipost, which belongs to the publishing group Madsack, under the name Mail Alliance against the main competitor Deutsche Post AG. However, P2 did not join at that time. In June 2010, the Madsack publishing group acquired six City-Post companies. Five companies were integrated into LVZ Postlogistik Leipzig (Leipzig, Delitzsch and Eilenburg, Grimma and Wurzen, Döbeln and Oschatz, and Borna and Geithain). City-Post Torgau was integrated into Postlogistik Torgau. The six companies are part of the P2 Brief + Paket network, and this was not to change. LVZ Postlogistik applied for membership in the P2 network, which would give the Citipost network and the Mail Alliance direct access to the P2 network. In 2012, the network, together with its partners, employed 45,000 people and served approximately 50,000 customers, according to its own press release for its fifth anniversary. At the mailingtagen in Nuremberg, P2 issued nationwide stamps for the first time by a private postal company after the insolvency of the PIN Group. The network includes companies such as BWPOST in Stuttgart (formed in 2009 from the merger of Briefbote Südwest and SchwabenPost), MZZ Briefdienst in Halle (Saale) (a subsidiary of Bauer Media Group), VDL Sachsen Holding in Chemnitz (a subsidiary of Chemnitzer Verlag und Druck GmbH & Co. KG/Freie Presse, part of Medien Union), PZO Pressezustellservice Oderland GmbH in Frankfurt/Oder, Nordkurier in Neubrandenburg, Zustellgesellschaft Schleswig-Holstein mbH in Flensburg, Biber Post in Magdeburg, Maxi Mail in Griesheim, Ostalb Mail in Aalen, Regio Mail in Heilbronn, Südwest Mail Hohenlohe in Crailsheim, LMF Logistic Mail Factory (Schwaben Mail) in Augsburg, südmail in Weingarten, Südwest Mail in Ulm, NordBrief in Kiel, LVZ Postlogistik GmbH & Co. KG in Leipzig, Mittelhessen Mail in Gießen, S..mail | GEA Post-Service GmbH in Reutlingen, Citipost GmbH in Hannover, MAZ MAIL in Potsdam, and Morgenpost Briefservice GmbH in Mannheim. Companies that have left the network include Annen Post (formerly BSB Brief Service Brakel GmbH & Co. KG), Der Lünebote Kurierdienst GmbH, WAZ Post Service GmbH, Elbkurier, Rheinkurier, and Regio Post Pfalz. Major competitors include Deutsche Post AG and the former shareholders of the insolvent postal service providers PIN Group and Xanto.
