Overview

Ovolab is an Italian software house and mobile app developer founded in December 2002 by Alberto Ricci. Originally focused on bringing software products to Macintosh users, the company has evolved into a digital product studio that designs and builds native and web applications for well-known brands. It is headquartered in Torino (Turin), with a second office in Milano (Milan), and operates as Ovolab S.r.l. within what it describes as the Ovolab Group. Ovolab's core business is end-to-end app creation: UX/UI design, Apple platform development (iOS, watchOS, macOS, tvOS, visionOS) using Swift and SwiftUI, Android development with Jetpack Compose, and API integration. The company positions itself as a long-standing veteran of the Apple ecosystem, noting that it has been publishing on the App Store since its launch in 2008 and that four of the first five hundred apps available at launch were developed by Ovolab. It also had iPad apps ready for the iPad's release in 2010. Its client portfolio spans industries including automotive, fashion, health and beauty, IoT, media, publishing and radio, organized retail, and travel and tourism. Notable work includes apps for the Italian online newspaper Il Post, the Suzuki vehicle-owner app MySuzuki, the Marionnaud beauty e-commerce app, the Osterie d'Italia food and drink app (named Best Food & Drink app of App Store Italy), the Kruidvat retail app for the Dutch health and beauty chain, and the Twinkly smart-lighting app. Ovolab has also expanded through partnerships and acquisitions. In 2017 it was formally appointed Tech Partner of the AS Watson Group, and in 2019 it acquired the social reading platform Anobii from Mondadori. More recently, the company has moved into AI and digital services, with Etiqa joining Ovolab Group. Ovolab remains a privately held Italian company.

History

Ovolab was founded in December 2002 by Alberto Ricci as a software development company focused on bringing great products to Macintosh users. Its early flagship product was Phlink, launched in 2003, a telephony application for the Mac. This established the company's reputation in the Apple software ecosystem. When Apple launched the App Store in 2008, Ovolab was among the earliest developers: four of the first five hundred apps available at launch were developed by Ovolab. Two years later, in 2010, the company made it possible for its clients to have their iPad apps ready on the day the iPad was released. Over the following years, Ovolab developed multiple top paid, top grossing, and top free iPhone and iPad apps, and several of its apps were featured by Apple on the App Store, in TV ads, and in Steve Jobs keynotes. As the mobile market matured, Ovolab shifted from being primarily a product company to a client-services studio focused on mobile design and development. Its team grew to include senior developers and UI/UX designers experienced in creating mobile and desktop apps. The company serves clients across automotive, fashion, health and beauty, IoT, media, publishing and radio, organized retail, and travel and tourism. In 2017, Ovolab was formally appointed Tech Partner of the AS Watson Group, a major international health and beauty retailer. In 2019, it acquired the social reading and book cataloguing platform Anobii from the Italian publisher Mondadori, expanding beyond app development into digital platforms. More recently, Etiqa joined Ovolab Group, a move the company describes as expanding its AI and digital services capabilities. Today Ovolab operates from Torino (Corso Re Umberto 10) and Milano (Via Tortona 37), working with large clients on major products as well as smaller apps. It continues to position itself as a veteran of the Apple ecosystem, developing for iOS, watchOS, macOS, tvOS, and visionOS with Swift and SwiftUI, and for Android with Jetpack Compose.
