Overview
Ouzo Barbayanni is a Greek brand of ouzo produced by the Varvayiannis family distillery in Plomari, Lesbos. The family traces its ouzo production to 1860, when Efstathios Varvayiannis founded the distillery. The brand offers five different ouzo products, all made by distillation in small copper stills using 100% pure processes, high-quality anise and other raw materials, and the crystalline water of Plomari.
History
The Varvayiannis family's ouzo production dates to 1860, when Efstathios Varvayiannis, then 55 years old and born in 1805 in the Cyclades, decided to leave Odessa, where he had moved, and settle permanently in Plomari, Lesbos, founding the Varvayiannis distillery. He brought with him the art of distillation and the first still, purchased from Constantinople, as the cornerstone of his new business. Only thirteen years later, the founder died and his son Ioannis Varvayiannis took over the small business at the age of 46. Ioannis helped the business grow during a period favorable to the economy of Plomari, leveraging the busy commercial activity of the village port to distribute the family ouzo not only within and outside Plomari but also beyond the borders of Lesbos for the first time. He expanded the family's first distillery, equipping it with an additional copper still, which survives to this day. He died in 1906 at the age of 79. For 127 years and four generations, the Varvayiannis distillery was run by one person at a time. Today the brand offers five different ouzo products, all created by distillation using 100% pure processes in small copper stills, with high-quality anise and other raw materials, the addition of the crystalline water of Plomari, and the accumulated 164 years of experience of the Varvayiannis family in ouzo distillation.
