Overview
Naše řeč ("Our Language") is a Czech peer-reviewed scholarly journal dedicated to the study of Czech as a mother tongue. It was founded in 1916, with its first volume comprising ten issues, and has been published continuously since then. The journal is issued by the Czech Language Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences (Ústav pro jazyk český AV ČR, v. v. i.), based in Prague. In its early years, the publisher was listed as the Third Class of the Czech Academy of Emperor Franz Joseph for Sciences, Literature and Arts. The journal publishes studies written primarily in Czech, but also in English and occasionally in Slovak. Its scope covers contemporary Czech as well as its historical development, Czech grammar and vocabulary, orthography, stylistics (including the language of individual literary works), text linguistics, and the standard variety of Czech in relation to other language formations. It addresses issues of language culture, usage, norm, and codification, and fosters discussion on current linguistic topics. Besides original research articles, Naše řeč features reviews and reports on Czech and foreign literature and informs readers about domestic and international scholarly activities. A distinctive section is "Drobnosti" ("Details" or "Minor Contributions"), which offers original explanations or solutions to specific language problems, often focusing on a single word or a limited set of expressions, sometimes explaining etymology, commenting on meaning, or describing usage. These contributions have the character of scholarly studies but are case-oriented. Each issue typically ends with a language query from the language consulting service of the Czech Language Institute and its answer. All studies and "Drobnosti" are reviewed by at least two referees; reviews and shorter reports usually by one. The review process is double-blind. Studies include an English abstract, Czech and English keywords, and the author's address. The journal is indexed in ERIH Plus, Central and Eastern European Academic Source (EBSCO), Central European Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities, and the Bibliography of Czech Linguistics. Bibliographic records are also sent to Linguistic Bibliography/Bibliographie linguistique, Bibliografia Językoznawstwa Slawistycznego, the MLA International Bibliography, and Year's Work in Modern Language Studies. Since 2023, Naše řeč has been available in Open Access on its website and in the Kramerius digital library. It is also accessible via CEEOL and the digital library of the Czech Academy of Sciences. The journal's website is archived in the Czech web archive. As of 2023, the editor-in-chief is Martin Beneš, the executive editor is Hana Mžourková, and the editors are Jakub Sláma and Ivana Svobodová. The journal typically published five issues per year; from 2025 it publishes four issues annually.
