Overview

The Oskar Ursinus Vereinigung (OUV) — formally the Deutscher Verein zur Förderung des Eigenbaus von Luftfahrtgerät e. V., or German Association for the Promotion of Homebuilding of Aviation Equipment — is a German non-profit aviation association named after the aviation pioneer Oskar Ursinus. It was founded on 9 March 1968 at the Deutsches Museum in Munich on the initiative of Claudius Dornier jr. and Wolfgang Wagner, then editor-in-chief of a well-known aviation magazine. Its purpose is to support members in realising their own aircraft builds, from planning and construction through testing to final airworthiness certification with the Luftfahrt-Bundesamt (German Federal Aviation Office). Experienced aircraft inspectors and engineers assist builders throughout the process. Self-built aircraft in the OUV sense include replicas of historic aircraft, kit aircraft and original designs. The association supports not only individuals and clubs but also innovative university projects developing modern lightweight construction methods and alternative propulsion systems. Since its founding in 1968 the OUV has accompanied more than 650 aircraft and rotorcraft successfully to first flight. It currently has around 1,200 members (2026). The OUV is organised into a members' assembly, a presidium and a project committee, and operates its own aviation-technical operation (CAO) as well as a noise measurement facility. Carl-Friedrich Schmidt has been president of the association since 2026. Every year in mid-March the two-day spring meeting is held at the Technik-Museum Speyer, where speakers present on a wide range of aircraft construction topics and members present their own projects. The summer meeting is traditionally held as a fly-in, where members gather with their individually certified self-built aircraft. Both events are open to any interested non-member. Similar associations exist in other European countries, such as the Igo Etrich Club in Austria, EAS in Switzerland and RSA in France. The OUV maintains an official website at ouv.de and an online shop, and publishes news and project galleries for its members.
