Overview

Orgullo Galego ("Galician Pride") is a Galician-language digital community, media brand and small company dedicated to the promotion of the Galician language, culture and traditions on the internet. It was born on Facebook on 10 June 2016 as a page created by Borxa González and Anxo Sánchez, two young men from Pontevedra and A Coruña, initially to share their thoughts, ideas and reflections. The name came from the idea of providing a corner for everyone who feels proud of Galicia. As the page grew, the founders turned the project into a broader community, expanded to other networks and began producing their own content. Over the following years Orgullo Galego established a presence on Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, Twitch, TikTok, Ivoox, Telegram, Spotify, Bluesky, Threads, WhatsApp and Mastodon, and launched its own website. Its stated objectives are to promote Galician on social media, to disseminate Galician culture and history through posts on traditional festivals, characters, legends, gastronomy and heritage, to create resources such as educational materials, infographics and guides that make the language easier to use, and to train and inspire new generations to express themselves in Galician. The community has grown to more than 500,000 followers across social networks, making it one of the most followed and active digital communities in Galician. Since 2021 Orgullo Galego has been constituted as a company (S.L.). It runs an online shop and a subscription section giving access to exclusive content, promotion of events and projects, and a way to support the project. It has published dozens of articles on themes linked to Galician reality and more than 30,000 posts on social networks. Its Twitch channel hosts conversations with relevant figures such as the band Tanxugueiras, the writers Suso de Toro, Manuel Rivas, Ledicia Costas and Montse Fajardo, the musician Carlos Núñez, the anthropologist Rafa Quintía and the historian Anselmo López Carreira. The conversation with Anselmo López Carreira about the history of the Kingdom of Galicia won the audience award at the 2021 Youtubeiras edition, and in 2025 the channel won the audience award again for a conversation about the 1846 Revolution with César Caramês. In 2023 Orgullo Galego received the Rosalía de Castro Prize for Language. The brand positions itself as a digital loudspeaker for Galician language and culture, combining cultural dissemination with current affairs, denunciation and reflection, and acting as a platform for hundreds of social initiatives. It also produces practical cultural resources, such as a free downloadable guide to the magical night of San Xoán, and develops funded projects like "Martiño de Dumio: A espiritualidade popular no Reino da Galiza" (2025).

History

Orgullo Galego was born on Facebook on 10 June 2016 as a page created by Borxa González and Anxo Sánchez, two young men from Pontevedra and A Coruña. In its beginnings the page aimed to disseminate the thoughts, ideas and reflections of its founders. The name came from the idea of having a corner for all people who feel proud of their land. Due to the success achieved, the founders decided to transform the project into a community, give it more original content and extend it to other networks, ideas and projects. In the following years Orgullo Galego arrived on other platforms such as Instagram, Twitter, YouTube and more recently Twitch, TikTok, Ivoox, Telegram, Spotify, Bluesky, Threads, WhatsApp and Mastodon. They also have a website where they upload their own content. The first time they appeared publicly in the media was in an interview on Nós Televisión broadcast in November 2020. Orgullo Galego's objectives are the dissemination of the language, culture and traditions of Galicia but also, as indicated on their website, to be current affairs, denunciation and reflection. This community is the loudspeaker for the dissemination of hundreds of social initiatives. Since 2021 they have been constituted as a company (S.L.). They opened an online shop and also a subscription section through which to access exclusive content, promotion of events and projects and to collaborate with the project. They have published dozens of articles on different themes linked to Galician reality and more than 30,000 posts on social networks. The Galician language is the backbone of the project and they work to demonstrate that a large audience can be reached without abandoning the language of Galicia. They seek to contribute their grain of sand to the normalisation of a 100% Galician-language internet. They are present on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Telegram, Twitch, TikTok, YouTube, Spotify, Threads, WhatsApp, Ivoox, Bluesky and Mastodon, with a community of more than 500,000 people that continues to grow daily. In addition to the diverse content they upload daily on their social networks, they also have a Twitch channel where they converse with different relevant people such as the Tanxugueiras, Suso de Toro, Manuel Rivas, Rafa Quintía, Montse Fajardo, Ledicia Costas, Carlos Núñez or Anselmo López Carreira, among others. These conversations include content of all kinds but mainly linked to history, rites, traditions and current affairs. The conversation with Anselmo López Carreira about the history of the Kingdom of Galicia was awarded the audience prize in the 2021 edition of Youtubeiras. On their Spotify channel they have carried out several thematic playlists about music in Galician that seek to promote Galician bands that bet on the language of Galicia. In addition, on their website they have a list of bands that sing in Galician that exceeds 600. On their YouTube channel they also have series about the Camino de Santiago, conferences on Galician carnival traditions, informative videos about the Iberian Mascarada or Rubén Riós's series Camiñantes do Noso and Arrieiros Somos, the latter awarded at several festivals. In May 2022 it was selected by the Fondos Proxectos Culturais do Reino de Galiza of the culture area of the Deputación de Coruña. In 2023 it was awarded the Rosalía de Castro Prize for Language. In 2025 it won the audience prize Youtubeiras for the conversation about the 1846 Revolution with César Caramês.
