Overview
Kuhn Organ Builders Ltd is a Swiss organ-building company based in Männedorf. It was founded in 1864 by Johann Nepomuk Kuhn, a master organ builder from southern Germany who had settled in Männedorf. The company describes organ building as a field in which musical, technical and architectural/art-historical disciplines come together, and states that it aims to meet these different needs simultaneously. It emphasizes that every organ represents the work of the whole team, that only qualified specialists work in the company, and that it is committed to transparency, co-determination and partnership. The company states that it fully stands by its production plant in Männedorf and consciously refrains from importing components from low-cost countries.
History
The company's history began in 1864, when Johann Nepomuk Kuhn, a master organ builder, settled in Männedorf and founded his own company. A native of southern Germany, he had completed his training near Weigle in Stuttgart. He first saw the shores of Lake Zurich in 1863, when he came as an employee of Eberhard Friedrich Walcker to build a new organ for the church in Männedorf, and decided to stay and set up his own company. Within a few years Kuhn had made a name for himself and began to acquire major orders, including a concert hall organ at the Tonhalle in Zurich (1872), the organs in St. Gallen cathedral (1875) and the Minster in the old town of Zurich (1876). He only built mechanical cone chest organs, and to make larger instruments easier to play the company used the Barker lever or «pneumatique». After Nepomuk's death, his only son, Carl Theodor, took over management of the company in 1888.
