Overview

Oracle is an American multinational technology company that develops and sells software, cloud infrastructure, database systems, enterprise applications, hardware, and technology services. Founded in Santa Clara, California, on June 16, 1977, as Software Development Laboratories, the company was established by Larry Ellison, Bob Miner, and Ed Oates. It initially focused on commercializing relational database technology at a time when most business computing systems were built around proprietary and difficult-to-integrate data architectures. Oracle’s early product strategy emphasized portability across computer systems, a commercially important distinction that helped the company build a broad installed base among corporations and government organizations. The company’s central franchise is Oracle Database, a relational database management system used to store, organize, secure, and process operational and analytical data. Over time, Oracle expanded beyond database licenses into middleware, development tools, engineered systems, application software, infrastructure services, and support subscriptions. Its software portfolio now covers enterprise resource planning, finance, procurement, human capital management, customer experience, sales, marketing, supply-chain management, project management, analytics, integration, identity, and industry-specific workflows. Oracle’s enterprise applications business was built partly through internal development and partly through a large acquisition program. Purchases of PeopleSoft, JD Edwards, Siebel Systems, Hyperion, BEA Systems, Sun Microsystems, and other companies broadened Oracle’s reach from database infrastructure into business applications, analytics, middleware, hardware, and programming platforms. The company used these assets to compete more directly with SAP and other enterprise-software vendors. In 2010, Oracle introduced Fusion Applications, a unified application architecture that incorporated capabilities associated with several acquired product families and became the foundation for Oracle Fusion Cloud Applications. Cloud computing is now a major strategic pillar. Oracle Cloud Infrastructure provides compute, storage, networking, database, security, analytics, artificial intelligence, and platform services. Oracle also offers cloud-delivered applications through Oracle Fusion Cloud Applications, NetSuite, and industry products. A distinctive part of Oracle’s cloud strategy has been its effort to make Oracle databases and applications available in multicloud environments. Partnerships and interconnection arrangements with Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services, and Google Cloud allow customers to combine Oracle workloads with other hyperscalers rather than treating cloud platforms as mutually exclusive destinations. Oracle’s product scope also includes Java, obtained through the acquisition of Sun Microsystems; MySQL; Oracle NoSQL Database; Berkeley DB; TimesTen; Oracle Essbase; Oracle APEX; SQL Developer; NetBeans; Oracle Enterprise Manager; Oracle Fusion Middleware; and engineered hardware systems. The acquisition of Cerner in 2022 added electronic health records, clinical, revenue-cycle, and healthcare information technology capabilities, which Oracle has organized under Oracle Health and related healthcare businesses. The company has historically sold to large enterprises, public-sector institutions, financial organizations, telecommunications providers, manufacturers, retailers, universities, and healthcare systems. Its positioning combines mission-critical reliability, security, long-term support, compatibility with established enterprise environments, and a broad stack that can connect infrastructure, databases, applications, and industry workflows. Oracle’s business model has traditionally included software licenses, cloud subscriptions, technical support, consulting, hardware, and implementation services. Oracle remains one of the most influential enterprise tech…

History

Oracle’s history began on June 16, 1977, when Larry Ellison, Bob Miner, and Ed Oates founded Software Development Laboratories in Santa Clara, California. The founders had worked as consultants and drew on experience with large-scale computing and data systems. Ellison was particularly influenced by Edgar F. Codd’s relational model of data and by descriptions of IBM’s System R research database. The new company pursued a commercial relational database that could operate across different computer systems, a strategy that contrasted with more hardware-specific database products of the era. Oracle’s early work was connected to a database project for the Central Intelligence Agency whose codename was Oracle. The company used the Oracle name for its database product and later received permission to use the codename as the basis for its corporate identity. Software Development Laboratories changed its name to Relational Software, Inc. in 1979 and then to Oracle Systems Corporation in 1983, reflecting the growing importance of its flagship database. The company’s founders divided responsibilities according to their strengths: Miner led technical development, Oates worked in development and product activities, and Ellison became the principal salesperson and commercial strategist. During the early 1980s, Oracle promoted SQL and relational database technology as a flexible platform for business applications. Its database could be deployed across multiple operating systems and hardware configurations, helping Oracle attract customers and independent software developers. Oracle went public on March 12, 1986. The company continued to expand internationally and moved its world headquarters to Redwood Shores in Redwood City, California, in 1989. Its growth was supported by aggressive sales, a growing developer ecosystem, and the increasing importance of structured data in corporate information systems. In the late 1980s, Oracle began developing and selling applications that ran on its database. The initial focus included financial and manufacturing software. Although early applications were not consistently profitable and sometimes competed with Oracle’s independent software partners, they created a path toward a more integrated enterprise stack. Oracle gradually expanded from infrastructure software into applications, middleware, management tools, consulting, and support. This strategy became more important as enterprise customers began looking for strategic technology suppliers rather than isolated product vendors. The company accelerated its applications strategy through acquisitions. It acquired PeopleSoft in 2005 after a highly contested takeover, added Siebel Systems in 2006 to strengthen customer-relationship management, and acquired BEA Systems in 2008 to broaden middleware and enterprise infrastructure capabilities. These transactions gave Oracle a portfolio that could compete more directly with SAP in enterprise applications and with IBM and other vendors in middleware and systems management. In 2010, Oracle launched Fusion Applications, integrating capabilities associated with PeopleSoft, Siebel, JD Edwards, and Oracle’s own application development. Oracle’s 2010 acquisition of Sun Microsystems was another major turning point. Completed on January 27, 2010, the transaction added the Java programming language, Solaris, SPARC systems, storage technologies, and other hardware and software assets. It changed Oracle from a primarily software-oriented company into an integrated systems vendor. The transaction attracted regulatory attention because of Sun’s ownership of MySQL and generated concern among open-source communities. Oracle later discontinued or changed several Sun projects and became involved in major litigation with Google concerning Java copyrights and patents. In the 2010s, Oracle expanded through cloud, analytics, security, data management, and infrastructure acquisitions. It acquired Dyn in 2016, adding internet-performance and DNS capabilities, and continued developing cloud applications and platform services. Oracle’s stock listing moved from Nasdaq to the New York Stock Exchange in July 2013. The company also established a significant presence in Austin, Texas, and announced in December 2020 that its world headquarters would move there from Redwood Shores. Oracle’s cloud strategy developed in response to the rise of Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud. Rather than abandoning its established database and enterprise software base, Oracle sought to migrate those workloads to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure and to make them interoperable with competing clouds. In 2019, Oracle and Microsoft announced a partnership linking Oracle Cloud and Azure. The relationship expanded in 2023 with Oracle database services running on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure within Microsoft Azure environments. Oracle subsequently announced comparable relationships involving Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud, reinforcing its multicloud positioning. Healthcare became a larger strategic area after Oracle announced the acquisition of Cerner in December 2021. The transaction closed in 2022 and added electronic health records, clinical software, revenue-cycle management, and healthcare data capabilities. Oracle reorganized the business as Oracle Health and related healthcare operations, using the acquisition to enter more deeply into hospitals, clinicians, public-health organizations, and health systems. The company has since connected Oracle Health with broader cloud, database, artificial-intelligence, and industry software initiatives. In the 2020s, Oracle emphasized artificial intelligence, autonomous databases, cloud regions, specialized infrastructure, and large-scale data-center construction. Oracle Database 23ai and subsequent AI-oriented releases reflected the company’s effort to embed machine-learning and generative-AI capabilities into database and application workflows. At the same time, rapid infrastructure expansion created debate concerning electricity use, water consumption, environmental impact, and community effects around proposed data-center campuses. By fiscal 2026, Oracle was presenting cloud infrastructure and AI capacity as central growth engines while also reporting substantial workforce changes associated with restructuring and automation. Its current corporate identity is therefore broader than its original database business: Oracle operates as a full-stack enterprise technology provider combining databases, cloud infrastructure, applications, developer platforms, hardware, healthcare systems, and long-term technology services.
