Overview

The Or Movement (Hebrew: תנועת אור, 'Light Movement') is an Israeli non-profit organization dedicated to the development and settlement of the Negev and Galilee regions. Founded in 2002 by Roni Flamer, Ofir Fisher, Nir Blushtein, and Zevik Yaakovovitz, the movement aims to transform Israel's peripheral areas into thriving centers of life with high quality of life, economic opportunities, and accessible services. It operates in collaboration with government ministries, the Jewish Agency, local authorities, and KKL-JNF. The movement's flagship initiatives include the establishment of nine new communities in the Negev and Galilee: Merhav Am, Mitzpe Ilan, Eliav (formerly Haruv), Be'er Milka, Retamim, Givot Bar, Karmit, Hiran, and Shizaf. Additionally, it has settled 23 young settlement groups in peripheral communities. The Or Movement also founded the National Information Center for Settlement in the Negev and Galilee, which provides guidance and assistance to families interested in relocating to these regions. According to the movement, this center has assisted over 49,000 residents in moving to the Negev and Galilee. Other key projects include the 'Gate to the Negev' visitor center (Beit Bloomfield) in the Old City of Be'er Sheva, and the operation of a Knesset lobby to strengthen the periphery. The movement reports a social impact on hundreds of thousands of beneficiaries and an economic impact of over 12 billion NIS to date (according to KPMG). It has received numerous awards, including the President's Award for Volunteerism, the Knesset Chairman's Quality of Life Award, the Prime Minister's Award for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, the Yigal Allon Award for Pioneering, and the Yakir Ofakim Award. The Or Movement continues to promote its vision for Israel 2048, aiming to make Israel the best country to live in by developing the Negev and Galilee as thriving life centers. It remains active in community building, public construction, and advocacy for the periphery.
