Overview
Optimum Communications, Inc., previously known as Altice USA, is an American telecommunications provider controlled by French-Israeli businessman Patrick Drahi through the Altice group. The company operates primarily in the United States, with a particularly strong presence in the New York metropolitan area and additional cable and broadband systems in several Midwestern and Southern states. Its consumer services are marketed mainly under the Optimum name and include broadband internet, digital cable television, voice services, mobile connectivity, Wi-Fi access, and discounted internet programs for qualifying households. The company also serves business customers through Optimum Business, which combines broadband, fiber, telephone, and television services. The present company emerged from Altice's entry into the American cable market. Altice agreed to acquire Suddenlink Communications in 2015 and completed the transaction later that year. It then agreed to purchase Cablevision Systems Corporation from the Dolan family and other shareholders. That transaction closed in June 2016 after regulatory approvals, giving Altice a substantial American cable footprint and control of the Optimum service brand, which had originated with Cablevision. Altice combined the acquired operations under Altice USA, while continuing to use Optimum and Suddenlink as customer-facing brands for much of the business. Altice USA became a publicly traded company in 2017, raising approximately $2.2 billion in its initial public offering. In 2018, Altice separated the American subsidiary from Altice NV as an independent corporate entity, although Patrick Drahi retained control. During this period, the company pursued network modernization, including a multiyear fiber-to-the-home program intended to support substantially higher broadband speeds. It also expanded through selected acquisitions, including digital advertising company Audience Partners, later associated with Optimum Media, media company Cheddar, Service Electric in New Jersey, and Morris Broadband in North Carolina. The company gradually consolidated its consumer identity around Optimum. In 2022, Suddenlink systems began moving under the Optimum brand as part of the “Let's Reconnect” campaign and broader fiber deployments. In November 2025, Altice USA announced that it would change its corporate name to Optimum Communications, effective November 19, aligning the legal corporate identity with its principal service brand. Optimum's residential portfolio includes DOCSIS and fiber broadband, digital television, Voice over IP telephone service, mobile service using a nationwide 4G LTE network, and access to Optimum Wi-Fi hotspots. Its fiber network has been expanded across portions of its service footprint, while Optimum Business serves companies across the provider's multistate territory. The wider business also includes News 12 Networks, a group of regional news, weather, traffic, and sports channels serving communities in the New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut area. As a cable and broadband operator, Optimum Communications competes with large national and regional providers and is subject to programming carriage negotiations, telecommunications regulation, infrastructure investment requirements, and changing consumer demand for high-speed connectivity.
History
Optimum Communications traces its corporate development to Altice's expansion into the United States cable industry. In 2015, Altice announced that it would acquire Suddenlink Communications, then one of the larger cable operators in the United States. The transaction closed in December of that year and gave Altice a significant operating base outside its European markets. Altice subsequently announced the purchase of Cablevision Systems Corporation. Cablevision operated cable systems in the New York metropolitan area under the Optimum brand and also owned related media and communications assets. The transaction required approval from the Federal Communications Commission and several state and regional regulators. It closed in June 2016, after which Altice combined the acquired American businesses under Altice USA. The company retained Optimum as a major consumer brand while continuing for several years to operate Suddenlink systems under their existing identity. Network investment became a central strategic priority. In late 2016, Altice USA announced a multiyear fiber-to-the-home program designed to modernize its access network and support speeds substantially above those available through legacy cable systems. The company later reported progress toward extending the fiber network to a large number of homes. Its service portfolio included broadband internet, digital television, Voice over IP telephone services, Wi-Fi hotspots, and business communications. Mobile service was later offered through Optimum Mobile, using a nationwide 4G LTE network. In 2017, Altice USA completed an initial public offering on the New York Stock Exchange. The offering raised approximately $2.2 billion, providing the company with a public-market presence while it remained controlled by Patrick Drahi. In January 2018, Altice announced plans to separate the American operation from Altice NV. The separation produced an independently managed public company, but Drahi continued to control both businesses. The company expanded beyond its inherited cable footprint through acquisitions and adjacent businesses. In 2017, it acquired digital advertising company Audience Partners, which became associated with the company's advertising activities and was later known as Optimum Media. In 2019, Altice USA agreed to acquire digital media company Cheddar. In 2020, it announced the acquisition of Service Electric in New Jersey, and in 2021 it announced the purchase of Morris Broadband in North Carolina. Morris Broadband was later folded into Optimum operations. Programming carriage negotiations were a recurring feature of the company's history. Altice USA reached agreements with AMC Networks and The Walt Disney Company shortly before potential channel interruptions. It temporarily dropped Starz services in early 2018 before reaching a new multiyear agreement. It also faced a threatened dispute with 21st Century Fox involving entertainment, sports, and broadcast stations. These negotiations reflected the cost pressures and contractual complexity of the American pay-television market. The company increasingly consolidated its identity around Optimum. In 2022, Suddenlink systems began transitioning to the Optimum brand under the “Let's Reconnect” campaign, alongside fiber-to-the-home deployments. In November 2025, Altice USA announced that it would change its corporate name to Optimum Communications effective November 19. The change aligned the corporate name with the consumer brand used across broadband, television, voice, mobile, and business services. Optimum Communications operates as a communications infrastructure and services company rather than a single-product brand. Its principal activities are broadband access, cable and fiber distribution, telecommunications, wireless service, business connectivity, and local media. It also owns or operates News 12 Networks, a group of regional news, weather, traffic, and sports channels serving the New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut area. The company remains shaped by the legacy of Cablevision and Suddenlink, the ownership of the Altice group, continuing network upgrades, and competition from national cable, fiber, wireless, and satellite providers.
