Overview
OOO "Abris" (Russian: ООО «Абрис») is a Russian publishing house based in Chelyabinsk, founded in March 1994. The name derives from the German word "Abriß", meaning a drawing or sketch. The company specialises in cartographic products and local-history (krayevedeniye) publications, and is best known for its maps, thematic atlases and guidebooks covering Chelyabinsk and the wider Urals region. Abris publishes the local-history reference series "Познай свой край" (Know Your Land), the guidebook "Уральский перекрёсток" (Ural Crossroads, since 1996) and the newspaper "Приглашение к путешествию" (Invitation to Travel, since 1997). It is credited as the publisher of the first Chelyabinsk map-guides and thematic atlases, including "Место встречи" (Meeting Place), "Челябинск с точностью до дома" (Chelyabinsk Down to the House) and "Достопримечательности Урала" (Sights of the Urals). Its first book, released in 1994, was an album of outline maps for the geography of Chelyabinsk Oblast. Beyond print, Abris developed its own computer program LIVING MAP™ ("Живая карта") in 1994, on the basis of which an electronic reference work was created. The company has been a laureate of the All-Russian competition of the Russian Ministry of Education, is a member of the Chelyabinsk branch of the Russian Geographical Society, and is a co-founder of the Chelyabinsk Fund for the Development of Regional Tourism. As a limited liability company (ООО), Abris is privately held. Its output is aimed primarily at the Russian market, with a focus on regional geography, tourism and education.
