Overview

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) describes itself as Ontario's largest low-carbon electricity generator and one of North America's largest, most diverse generators of clean electricity. OPG operates a diverse range of generating assets that power Ontario homes and businesses, with 11,000+ employees generating roughly half of Ontario's electricity needs from a combination of nuclear, hydro, solar, biomass, and natural gas. Its generation portfolio in Ontario includes 66 hydroelectric stations, 2 nuclear stations, 1 solar facility, 1 biomass station, 1 dual-fuelled oil and gas station, 4 Atura Power combined-cycle gas turbine stations, and 1 Atura Power battery energy storage system. OPG also owns but does not operate two additional nuclear generating stations in Ontario that are leased to Bruce Power L.P. The company states it is leading the development of new clean technologies, advancing electrification initiatives, and refurbishing existing assets.

History

OPG states that it delivered one of the world's single-largest climate-specific actions by closing its coal stations. Under the leadership of President and CEO Nicolle Butcher, OPG's Darlington Refurbishment project was completed 4 months ahead of schedule and $150 million under budget. Construction on the Darlington Refurbishment has been completed and the project is set to be delivered under budget, ahead of schedule. OPG is refurbishing Pickering Nuclear to deliver decades of reliable, low-carbon energy while sustaining high-quality jobs and growing Ontario's nuclear supply chain. OPG marks new milestones in construction of the G7's first SMR, and will begin working with the Town of Port Hope and First Nations to explore new nuclear generation at its Wesleyville site.
