Overview

onsemi, formally ON Semiconductor Corporation, is an American semiconductor company headquartered in Scottsdale, Arizona. The company was established in 1999 through the spin-off of Motorola's Semiconductor Components Group and became a public company through an initial public offering in April 2000. It continued to manufacture Motorola-originated discrete, standard analog, and standard logic devices while building a broader portfolio through internal development and acquisitions. The company supplies power-management, analog, signal-management, logic, discrete, custom, and sensing products. Its offerings include power transistors, diodes, rectifiers, insulated-gate bipolar transistors, field-effect transistors, silicon-carbide devices, voltage regulators, controllers, drivers, amplifiers, comparators, interfaces, microcontrollers, image sensors, optical sensors, and application-specific integrated circuits. These products are components rather than finished consumer goods and are generally designed into larger systems. Automotive and industrial applications are central to the company's current positioning. In automotive, onsemi supplies technologies for vehicle electrification, charging, powertrain management, advanced driver-assistance systems, vehicle imaging, cabin sensing, and energy-efficient power conversion. In industrial markets, its products support renewable-energy systems, motor drives, factory automation, power supplies, medical equipment, and infrastructure. The company also serves communications, computing, consumer electronics, LED lighting, aerospace, and defense customers. The business expanded significantly through acquisitions. Notable transactions included Cherry Semiconductor, AMI Semiconductor, SANYO Semiconductor, Aptina Imaging, Fairchild Semiconductor, SensL Technologies, Quantenna Communications, GT Advanced Technologies, and SWIR Vision Systems. Fairchild strengthened the company's power-semiconductor position, while imaging and sensing acquisitions broadened its capabilities in automotive and industrial vision. The company later closed or divested selected activities, including the Quantenna business and certain legacy product lines. In 2021, the corporation adopted the onsemi brand to present itself as a broader technology company rather than a supplier identified primarily with standard semiconductor components. Its business is organized around analog and mixed-signal, intelligent sensing, and power solutions activities. Manufacturing, packaging, design, and engineering operations span North America, Europe, and Asia. onsemi remains listed on the Nasdaq under the symbol ON and continues to focus its portfolio on energy efficiency, electrification, automation, and intelligent sensing.

History

onsemi was created in 1999 when Motorola separated its Semiconductor Components Group into an independent company. The new business inherited established lines in discrete semiconductors, standard analog devices, and standard logic, as well as manufacturing and engineering capabilities associated with Motorola's semiconductor operations. Its initial headquarters were in the Phoenix area of Arizona. The company completed an initial public offering on April 28, 2000. During the 2000s, onsemi broadened beyond its inherited product base through a series of acquisitions. Cherry Semiconductor added automotive and power-management expertise. Purchases and integrations involving TESLA SEZAM and TEROSIL expanded operations in the Czech Republic, while the acquisition of an LSI Logic facility added manufacturing capacity. The company also purchased a CPU-voltage and PC-thermal-monitoring business from Analog Devices, Catalyst Semiconductor, AMI Semiconductor, PulseCore Semiconductor, and California Micro Devices. These transactions increased its exposure to analog, timing, power, interface, and application-specific products. The company continued its expansion in the following decade. It acquired SANYO Semiconductor in 2011 and obtained imaging-related assets from Cypress Semiconductor. Truesense Imaging, Aptina Imaging, and Axsem strengthened image sensing and embedded connectivity capabilities. In 2015, onsemi announced an agreement to acquire Fairchild Semiconductor; the deal closed in 2016 and significantly increased the combined company's scale and power-semiconductor portfolio. Some activities were subsequently divested, including selected ignition IGBT, transient-voltage-suppression diode, and switching-thyristor product lines sold to Littelfuse. In 2017, the company acquired and licensed millimeter-wave technology developed by IBM's research organization for automotive radar. It acquired SensL Technologies in 2018, adding single-photon and advanced sensing expertise. In 2019, onsemi acquired Quantenna Communications, a fabless supplier associated with Wi-Fi technology. The company later discontinued the Quantenna division after efforts to sell the assets did not produce a buyer. Also in 2019, onsemi signed the United Nations Global Compact and agreed to acquire a 300-millimeter wafer fabrication facility in East Fishkill, New York, from GlobalFoundries; that transaction was completed in 2023. Leadership changed in 2020 when Keith Jackson retired and Hassane El-Khoury became chief executive. In 2021, the company changed its public brand from ON Semiconductor to onsemi. The rebrand communicated a strategy centered on intelligent power and sensing, electrification, automation, and high-value automotive and industrial applications. The company also agreed to acquire GT Advanced Technologies, a producer of silicon-carbide materials and technology, supporting its efforts in wide-bandgap power semiconductors. In the 2020s, onsemi continued to emphasize silicon carbide, imaging, and advanced sensing. It completed the acquisition of SWIR Vision Systems in 2024, broadening short-wave infrared capabilities, and announced an agreement to acquire Qorvo's silicon-carbide junction field-effect transistor business, including the United Silicon Carbide subsidiary. Its global footprint includes design centers, solution-engineering centers, and manufacturing operations across the Americas, Europe, and Asia. The company currently operates through activities commonly described as the Analog and Mixed-Signal Group, Intelligent Sensing Group, and Power Solutions Group, serving a worldwide customer base while remaining listed on Nasdaq under ON.
