Overview
Onimusic is a Brazilian gospel record label and music distributor founded in September 2004 by the couple Nelson and Christie Tristão in Nova Lima, Minas Gerais. The company began as a distribution service for albums recorded at Christian conferences, addressing a demand from artists and bands who did not want to be tied to traditional evangelical labels such as MK Music and Line Records. Over the years, it evolved into a full-fledged record label and also operates a music publishing arm called Adorando, which holds a catalog of more than 200,000 works by Brazilian and international authors, according to a survey by the Brazilian Independent Music Association (ABMI). Onimusic has played a key role in developing the independent gospel scene in southeastern Brazil, helping launch and promote artists such as David Quinlan, Judson Oliveira, Ministério Asas da Adoração, Livres para Adorar, and Fernandinho, who became the label's most commercially successful artist. The label's early successes include Fernandinho's album Sede de Justiça (2007), which achieved Gold status, and Uma Nova História (2009), which went Gold within five days of release. In 2010, Onimusic launched Onimusic Internacional, a division that distributed albums from the English label Kingsway in Brazil. The label also introduced an anti-piracy system called Monitora in 2012 and a support platform for emerging Christian musicians called In The Beginning Music in 2013. In the 2010s, Onimusic strengthened its market position by signing artists such as Gabriela Rocha, Diante do Trono, and Laura Souguellis. At the Deezer Gospel Day 2019 event, the label was honored, and its founders spoke about their mission to serve Christian music. Three of its associated artists received awards at the event, highlighting the label's impact on digital streaming platforms. Today, Onimusic describes itself as a technology and digital intelligence company that has been serving Christian artists for 19 years, amplifying the reach of their songs and distributing "a sound that feeds." The company emphasizes innovation, close relationships with associates and partners, and the development of proprietary tools to benefit its artists.
History
Onimusic was founded in September 2004 by Nelson and Christie Tristão in Nova Lima, Minas Gerais, following what they described as divine guidance to work in music. Nelson Tristão created the company to meet a specific demand from bands and artists who did not want to be tied to a record label. At the time, the common practice was to sign with large evangelical labels such as MK Music and Line Records. According to Tristão, his initiative offered a new option that did not exist in the Christian sector. He began by distributing albums recorded at conferences such as "Som da Chuva" and "Fogo e Glória," led by David Quinlan. Initially focused only on distribution, Onimusic became a record label after a few years. The label helped form and boost several artists of the independent gospel scene in southeastern Brazil, including David Quinlan, Judson Oliveira, Ministério Asas da Adoração, Livres para Adorar, and Fernandinho, who became the label's most commercially successful artist. In 2006, Onimusic signed an agreement with Sony DADC to manufacture discs and meet growing demand. On May 28, 2007, Fernandinho's album Sede de Justiça was released. The following month, Sony DADC notified Onimusic that the album had reached Gold status with sales exceeding 50,000 copies. It was also a sales leader in several evangelical bookstores, becoming the label's first major success. In 2009, Onimusic gained further prominence with the album Uma Nova História, which was certified Gold just five days after release, setting a sales record, and several songs from the album became popular on Christian radio. The release Pra que Outros possam Viver also became a moderate success, earning Gold and radio hits with songs like "Vai Valer a Pena" and "Tempos Melhores," highlighting the band Livres para Adorar, then considered one of the most successful evangelical bands nationally. In 2010, the label participated in Expo Cristã 2010 in São Paulo, where several of its artists launched new projects. In August of that year, Onimusic launched Onimusic Internacional, a division that distributed albums from the English label Kingsway in Brazil. In 2011, Livres para Adorar released Mais um Dia, which found success on radio and the internet with songs like "Quando o Mundo Cai ao Meu Redor," "O Ladrão em Mim," and "Rei da Glória," and received several Troféu Promessas nominations. Fernandinho's Teus Sonhos sold 80,000 copies in about 20 days, becoming Platinum and ranking 11th in the "15 best gospel albums of Brazil in 2012" by Geração Jovem. In 2012, the label launched an anti-piracy system called "Monitora." On July 29, 2013, it launched In The Beginning Music, a support platform for emerging Christian musicians and bands. The following year, Fernandinho achieved another Gold record with Fernandinho Acústico, which sold 50,000 copies in two days. During the 2010s, the label further strengthened its gospel market position by signing Gabriela Rocha, Diante do Trono, and Laura Souguellis. At the Deezer Gospel Day 2019 event, Onimusic was honored, and founders Nelson and Christie Tristão spoke about the privilege of serving ministers who are now associates through music distribution. Three of its more than 70 associates received awards: Gabriela Rocha for most fans on Deezer (about one million), the most listened song of the year ("Lugar Secreto"), and second place in the top 5 most listened Christian artists; Fernandinho for the third consecutive year in first place in the top 5 most listened artists and fourth place for most listened song with "Galileu"; and Isaías received the 2019 revelation award.
