Overview
Ongoing Strategy Investments SGPS, S.A. is a Portuguese private investor group, commonly known as the Ongoing Group. It traces its origins to the 19th-century soap and cleaning-products company Sociedade Nacional de Sabões Ltda. (SNS), owned by the Rocha dos Santos family. After the 1974 Carnation Revolution, SNS grew into Portugal's largest private conglomerate, with activities spanning chemicals, agrochemicals, food, advertising, media and financial markets. In 1991 SNS sold its detergent and cleaning business, along with parts of its cosmetics business, to Henkel. The modern Ongoing entity was founded in 2004 by Nuno Rocha dos Santos de Almeida e Vasconcellos to organize and professionalize the family's investments, with a focus on Portugal and Portuguese-speaking countries. Nuno Vasconcellos is the son of Luís Vasconcellos (d. 2009), a co-founder of the newspaper Expresso and co-owner of the media group Impresa, and of Isabel Rocha dos Santos, main shareholder of Ongoing and only child of SNS founder João Rocha dos Santos. Since its founding, the Ongoing Group has repositioned itself around telecommunications, media and technology, energy and infrastructure, and financial services and real estate. It has held strategic stakes in Portugal Telecom and the Espírito Santo Financial Group, and financial stakes in Impresa — owner of Portuguese TV channel SIC and newspaper Expresso — as well as ZON Multimédia. The group fully owns the business newspapers Diário Económico (Portugal) and Brasil Econômico (Brazil), and the companies Mobbit Systems and CTN. Geographically, Ongoing focuses on Portugal and Portuguese-speaking economies such as Brazil, Angola and Mozambique. The group aims to develop a multimedia platform for the creation, production and distribution of content and services for a potential global market of 250 million customers, and seeks to establish a network of strategic partners for long-term worldwide operations. In March 2010, the Portuguese competition authority blocked an Ongoing Group offer to buy a 35 percent stake in Media Capital from the Spanish media group PRISA. Media Capital is Portugal's largest media group, owning the most-watched TV channel TVI and the production company Plural. The deal, announced by Prisa in September 2009, would have given Ongoing a 30 percent stake in the heavily indebted Prisa (around €5 billion of debt) and was estimated at approximately €135,000,000 (US$181,300,000).
