Overview
Oncoatlas (Russian: ОнкоАтлас), legally ООО «Онкодиагностика Атлас», is a private Russian biotechnology R&D company specialising in precision oncology and genetics. It was founded in 2011 by molecular biologist and entrepreneur Vladislav Mileyko as ЦСБ Геномика (CSB Genomika), originally a startup developing non-invasive cancer diagnostics technology. Co-author and later co-founder was Pavel Laktionov, Mileyko's academic supervisor. The company became a resident of Skolkovo and worked closely with the Institute of Chemical Biology and Fundamental Medicine of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Novosibirsk), the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (Dolgoprudny) and the Blokhin Russian Cancer Research Centre. After early fundraising difficulties, the company shifted focus from early-stage research to applied products and services for oncogenetics. In October 2015 it joined the Atlas biomedical holding, one of the leaders in personalised medicine on the Russian market, and changed its name to «Онкодиагностика Атлас» (Oncoatlas Molecular Oncology Centre). The holding acquired a 70% majority stake, with Mileyko retaining 30%; the deal value was not disclosed. As a new division of the Atlas holding, Oncoatlas developed a full-cycle diagnostic service combining molecular tumour testing for individualised therapy selection with information support for patients and treating physicians. In 2017 it launched its precision oncology service under the Solo brand, with the first commercial products «Solo Комплекс» and «Solo Риск» for personalised therapy selection in cancer patients and hereditary cancer syndrome detection in healthy individuals. Oncoatlas became one of the first companies on the Russian market to create a full-cycle diagnostic service for cancer patients and their relatives. Oncoatlas also develops NGS test systems and reagent kits for laboratories. In April 2020 it became the first in Russia to register the «Соло-тест АBC» reagent kit for detecting genetic mutations associated with breast and ovarian cancer risk using NGS on the Illumina MiSeq platform, with stated sensitivity above 95% and specificity above 99%. According to a study by the Smart Consult group, Oncoatlas held 50% of the Russian NGS oncology testing market by value in 2020. The company's services include therapy selection, hereditary risk assessment, and custom NGS test development, offered to laboratories, patients and research institutions.
History
Oncoatlas was founded in 2011 as ЦСБ Геномика (CSB Genomika) by Vladislav Mileyko, a molecular biologist, entrepreneur and laureate of the Zvorykin Prize. The company began as a startup developing technology for non-invasive cancer diagnostics. Co-author and later co-founder was Pavel Laktionov, Mileyko's academic supervisor. After its founding, CSB Genomika became a resident of Skolkovo and worked in close cooperation with the Institute of Chemical Biology and Fundamental Medicine of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Novosibirsk), the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (Dolgoprudny) and the Blokhin Russian Cancer Research Centre. During its work on the project, CSB Genomika attracted 3 million rubles from the Russian Academy of Sciences and 5 million rubles from the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation. In 2013 it received a grant from the Foundation for Assistance to Small Innovative Enterprises to develop technology for extracting DNA and RNA biomarkers from human blood, which would allow genetic material from affected tissues to be isolated and analysed without invasive intervention. The company actively engaged in fundraising on the venture capital market, but failed to attract sufficient investment for clinical trials and early-stage development. A decision was made to shift focus towards applied products and services for oncogenetics. In early October 2015, CSB Genomika joined the Atlas biomedical holding, one of the leaders in personalised medicine on the Russian market, and changed its name to «Онкодиагностика Атлас» (Oncoatlas Molecular Oncology Centre). The holding acquired a majority stake of 70%, with Vladislav Mileyko retaining 30%; the deal value was not disclosed. As a new division of the Atlas holding, Oncoatlas developed a comprehensive diagnostic service including molecular tumour testing for individualised therapy selection, as well as information support for patients and treating physicians. Related studies were conducted in cooperation with the Blokhin Russian Cancer Research Centre, Moscow City Oncology Hospital No. 62 and the ReadSense genomic centre in Troitsk. In October 2016, the first results were presented at the European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO) congress and published in Annals of Oncology. Also in autumn 2016, the venture fund Primer Capital invested 5 million rubles in Oncoatlas to prepare and launch sales of the comprehensive diagnostic service and to conduct trials and register NGS-based test systems. Fund experts estimated the potential market for this product at 3 billion rubles. In 2017, Oncoatlas developed and launched its precision oncology service under the Solo brand. The first commercial products were «Solo Комплекс» and «Solo Риск», intended for personalised therapy selection for cancer patients and for determining hereditary cancer syndromes in healthy individuals. Oncoatlas became one of the first companies on the Russian market to create a full-cycle diagnostic service for cancer patients and their relatives. In 2018, the company's achievements were presented at the European congress on molecular oncology MAP-2018 (Molecular Analysis for Personalised Therapy). In parallel, Oncoatlas worked on creating test systems for NGS research in oncology. In April 2020, Oncodiagnostika Atlas became the first in Russia to register the «Соло-тест АBC» reagent kit for detecting genetic mutations associated with breast and ovarian cancer risk using NGS on the Illumina MiSeq instrument, with stated sensitivity above 95% and specificity above 99%. The kit allows simultaneous analysis of up to 96 samples. According to a study by the Smart Consult group, by the end of 2020 Oncoatlas held 50% of the Russian NGS oncology testing market (by value). The launch of Solo-test ABC, designed to diagnose mutations in BRCA1, BRCA2, ATM and CHEK2 genes associated with breast cancer and other oncological diseases, led to the introduction of a new tariff for NGS testing of these genes in the Russian compulsory medical insurance system. In February 2021, the company signed a contract to supply specialised reagent kits to the Republican Medical Genetic Centre in Ufa for 2.4 million rubles, enabling the testing of 400 patients from the Volga region by the end of 2021. In 2021, the Solo-test ABC test system was trialled at Moscow Oncology Hospital No. 62. More than 600 tests for BRCA1/BRCA2 mutations were performed using the test system under compulsory medical insurance. Analysis showed that 8% of breast cancer patients had mutations, 40% of which were rare variants that could not be detected by routine PCR testing for the 8 most common mutations. A similar situation was observed in ovarian cancer patients, where more than half had rare mutation variants. In patients with pancreatic and prostate cancer, genetic testing using new...
