Overview

OMV Refining & Marketing GmbH is the downstream business of OMV Aktiengesellschaft, the Austrian integrated oil, gas and chemicals group headquartered in Vienna. The unit covers refining, fuel retail and marketing, and pipeline operations, and is the part of OMV that turns crude oil into finished products and sells them to motorists, businesses and industry. Its refining assets include the Schwechat refinery near Vienna, the Burghausen refinery in Bavaria, Germany, and the Petrobrazi refinery in Ploiesti, Romania, giving the business a substantial refining footprint in Central and Eastern Europe. On the marketing side, OMV Refining & Marketing operates the OMV and Avanti petrol-station networks, one of the largest fuel-retail chains in Central and Eastern Europe, with stations in Austria, Germany, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Moldova. The retail offer combines fuels with convenience retail, car washes and, increasingly, electric-vehicle charging and alternative fuels. The unit also supplies commercial fuels, bitumen, lubricants and petrochemical feedstocks to business customers. OMV Refining & Marketing is not a separately listed company; it is a subsidiary and reporting segment of OMV Aktiengesellschaft, which is listed on the Vienna Stock Exchange. The downstream business has been reshaped over the years through refinery upgrades, the integration of Petrom's Romanian assets, the sale of the Bayernoil stake and other portfolio moves, and a strategic push into lower-carbon products. The unit is central to OMV's strategy of running an integrated downstream value chain from refinery gate to end customer.

History

OMV Refining & Marketing GmbH is the downstream arm of OMV Aktiengesellschaft, the Austrian oil and gas group. OMV itself traces its origins to the 1950s, when the Austrian state created a company to manage the country's oil refining and marketing assets, including the Schwechat refinery near Vienna. Over the following decades OMV grew into Austria's dominant oil company, expanding refining capacity and building a nationwide petrol-station network. The modern downstream business took shape through a series of acquisitions and integrations. In 2004 OMV acquired a majority stake in Romania's Petrom, the largest oil and gas company in Romania, bringing the Petrobrazi refinery and a large Romanian fuel-retail network into the group. In 2005 OMV acquired a stake in the German refining and marketing business Bayernoil, and in 2006 it took over the German fuel retailer Aral's operations in Austria and several Central European countries, converting many stations to the OMV brand. These moves made OMV one of the leading fuel retailers in Central and Eastern Europe. OMV Refining & Marketing GmbH was established as the legal entity and reporting unit for the downstream segment, covering refining, marketing and pipeline activities. Its refining portfolio has included the Schwechat refinery in Austria, the Burghausen refinery in Germany and the Petrobrazi refinery in Romania, supported by petrochemical operations at Schwechat and Burghausen. The unit also holds interests in pipeline systems that connect its refineries and markets to international crude and product flows. In the 2010s and 2020s the downstream business focused on efficiency, portfolio optimisation and lower-carbon diversification. OMV sold its stake in Bayernoil, streamlined refining operations and invested in the Schwechat and Burghausen sites to improve competitiveness and produce cleaner fuels. The retail network was modernised with convenience formats, loyalty programmes and electric-vehicle charging, and OMV set targets to reduce the carbon intensity of its product portfolio. The downstream unit remains a core part of OMV Group's integrated strategy, linking upstream production to end customers across Central and Eastern Europe.
