Overview

Omnibusbetrieb Saalekreis GmbH (OBS) is a German public transport company that operates regional scheduled bus services between the city of Halle (Saale) and the surrounding Saalekreis district in Saxony-Anhalt. The company traces its origins to 1990, when it emerged from the state-owned VEB Kraftverkehr Halle, which had operated interurban bus routes in the Saalkreis area as well as the extensive city bus network of the then-independent city of Halle-Neustadt. Today OBS is a subsidiary of Vetter Verkehrsbetriebe, a private transport group. OBS focuses on regional bus transport within the Mitteldeutscher Verkehrsverbund (MDV), the public transport authority for the Leipzig-Halle region. It has been a member of the MDV since 2001, allowing a unified tariff to apply across its network. The company's route network includes several lines that were upgraded to PlusBus or TaktBus standards following the launch of the S-Bahn Mitteldeutschland, reflecting an effort to coordinate bus services with rail. Some of its lines are also part of the Bahn-Bus-Landesnetz Sachsen-Anhalt, a state programme linking bus and rail services. The fleet is dominated by buses from the Czech manufacturer SOR, supplemented by Irisbus/Iveco Crossway (LE) vehicles and a small remaining number of Mercedes-Benz Citaro buses. In addition to its main depot on Kaolinstraße in Halle, OBS uses numerous outdoor parking and staging locations across the Saalekreis, including Bad Lauchstädt, Beesenstedt, Brachwitz, Dieskau, Döblitz, Dornstedt, Höhnstedt, Löbejün, Niemberg, Osmünde, Räther, Sennewitz, Trebnitz and Wettin. As a regional bus operator, OBS is not a household consumer brand but a local public transport provider. Its services are essential for mobility in the southern Saxony-Anhalt region, connecting smaller towns and villages with the urban centre of Halle. The company operates under the umbrella of Vetter Verkehrsbetriebe and remains an active participant in the MDV network.

History

Omnibusbetrieb Saalekreis GmbH (OBS) was established in 1990, emerging from the state-owned VEB Kraftverkehr Halle. Before 1990, VEB Kraftverkehr Halle operated interurban bus lines in the Saalkreis (and partly beyond, often in cooperation with other state transport companies) as well as the extensive city bus network of Halle-Neustadt, which was then an independent city. The transition in 1990 took place in the context of German reunification and the restructuring of the East German transport sector. In 2001, OBS became a member of the Mitteldeutscher Verkehrsverbund (MDV), the regional transport authority for the Leipzig-Halle area. This membership allowed the MDV tariff to be applied across the entire OBS network, simplifying ticketing for passengers. The company is a subsidiary of Vetter Verkehrsbetriebe, a private transport group. Following the launch of the S-Bahn Mitteldeutschland, OBS upgraded several of its lines to PlusBus and TaktBus standards. Lines 190, 309, 312, 320, 330, 341, 345, 350, 358 and 380 became PlusBus, while lines 301 and 353 became TaktBus. Additionally, lines 312 (Halle ↔ Teutschenthal ↔ Querfurt), 320 (Halle ↔ Holleben ↔ Bad Lauchstädt), 330 (Halle ↔ Wettin ↔ Löbejün), 350 (Halle ↔ Brachstedt ↔ Zörbig) and 380 (Halle ↔ Salzmünde ↔ Müllerdorf) are part of the Bahn-Bus-Landesnetz Sachsen-Anhalt, a state programme to integrate bus and rail services. The fleet has evolved over time. The largest portion now consists of vehicles from the Czech manufacturer SOR. The fleet also includes Irisbus/Iveco Crossway (LE) buses and only a few remaining Mercedes-Benz Citaro vehicles. OBS operates its main depot on Kaolinstraße in Halle and uses numerous outdoor staging locations throughout the Saalekreis, including Bad Lauchstädt, Beesenstedt, Brachwitz, Dieskau, Döblitz, Dornstedt, Höhnstedt, Löbejün, Niemberg, Osmünde, Räther, Sennewitz, Trebnitz and Wettin.
