Overview

Omnibus Müller, formally Friedrich Müller Omnibusunternehmen GmbH (FMO), is a German bus company headquartered in Schwäbisch Hall, Baden-Württemberg. It operates numerous regional bus routes, primarily under contract to public transport authorities and as part of the Deutsche Bahn group. The company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Regional Bus Stuttgart GmbH (RBS), which in turn belongs to DB Regio AG, the regional transport division of Deutsche Bahn. The business was founded in 1928 by Friedrich Müller as a small car rental company in Schwäbisch Hall. In 1931 it began operating bus services between Schwäbisch Hall, Waldenburg and Langenburg. After the Second World War, scheduled and occasional services were expanded. In 1976 the company moved to its current headquarters in the Schmollerstraße in the Hessental district of Schwäbisch Hall. On 18 April 2001, Omnibus Müller was acquired by Regional Bus Stuttgart (RBS). At the end of 2002, RBS transferred its route concessions in the Schwäbisch Hall district and northern Ostalbkreis to its subsidiary. In 2016, the administration of five Deutsche Bahn bus companies operating mainly in Baden-Württemberg (BRN, FMO, RBS, RVS, SBG) was centralised in Karlsruhe. Since 2017, FMO has won several route bundles in EU-wide tenders, benefiting from the private bus operators' collective wage agreement, which allows it to offer services more cheaply than RBS and other DB bus companies. It expanded into districts such as Böblingen, Rastatt, Ludwigsburg, Esslingen, Karlsruhe, Rems-Murr, Enzkreis and Pforzheim. By August 2019, its route network covered around 18 million kilometres per year, and its own fleet had grown to more than 150 buses. In 2023 it took over remaining services from RBS, creating new regional centres in Aalen and Heilbronn, and in 2025 it began operating a route bundle in Waiblingen and surroundings. Omnibus Müller operates both its own routes and services on behalf of RBS and other authorities. Its network serves hundreds of thousands of residents in Baden-Württemberg, with depots and operating locations in Schwäbisch Hall, Bühlertann, Crailsheim, Ellwangen, Marbach, Heilbronn, Abstatt, Gundelsheim, Dahenfeld, Weinsberg, and other towns. The company is a key regional bus provider within the Deutsche Bahn group, focused on scheduled regional bus transport, school transport, and occasional services.

History

Friedrich Müller founded a small car rental company in Schwäbisch Hall in 1928. In 1931, he established a bus service between Schwäbisch Hall, Waldenburg and Langenburg. After the Second World War, the company expanded its scheduled and occasional transport services. When the former depot on Louis-Braun-Straße became too small, Omnibus Müller inaugurated its current headquarters on Schmollerstraße in the Hessental district in 1976. On 18 April 2001, the company was acquired by Regional Bus Stuttgart (RBS). The reason given for the reorganisation was the changed market situation, with participation in tenders and development of transport concepts to be handled under one roof. In EU-wide tenders for bus services, FMO won several route bundles in Baden-Württemberg from 2017 onwards. Because the company is subject to the collective wage agreement for private bus operators, it could offer its services more cheaply than its parent company RBS and other Deutsche Bahn bus companies. On 10 December 2017, FMO took over bus services in route bundles 4, 8, 9 and 10 (lot 1) in the Böblingen district and in route bundle Rastatt Süd II in the Rastatt district. On 1 January 2018, route bundles 2 (Stromberg) and 8 (Neckartal) in the Ludwigsburg district followed. Since 1 December 2018, route bundle 1 (Filderstadt/Leinfelden-Echterdingen) in the Esslingen district and since 9 December 2018 the Lußhardt route bundle in the Karlsruhe district have been operated by FMO. On 1 January 2019, route bundles 9, 10 and 11 (Backnang and surroundings) in the Rems-Murr district followed. Route bundle 4 (Ditzingen) in the Ludwigsburg district was awarded to RBS on 1 January 2019. Before operations began, the concession was transferred from RBS to FMO. The company Klingel operates as a subcontractor on the routes. In the Marbach/Bottwartal area, the previous arrangement largely remained – route bundle 6 in the Ludwigsburg district was also awarded to RBS on 1 August 2019, and FMO continued to provide services as a contract company together with other private bus operators. FMO also applied for the Böblingen/Sindelfingen city transport but narrowly lost to the incumbent operator Pflieger due to the existing operator privilege. Since December 2019, FMO has operated the Hardt West-Nord route bundle, and since December 2020 the Ettlingen I route bundle in the Karlsruhe district. Since December 2022, lot I in the Neuenbürg/Straubenhardt transport area has been served, marking the first services in the Enzkreis and Pforzheim. On 1 July 2025, FMO took over route bundle 2 in the Rems-Murr district (Waiblingen and surroundings). In 2016, Omnibus Müller operated 36 of its own bus routes and ran services on 19 additional routes on behalf of RBS. Its catchment area covered around 400,000 inhabitants over a network of more than 1,300 kilometres, with around 5.4 million scheduled kilometres per year. At that time, FMO had 40 of its own buses, while contract companies operated 98 additional vehicles. The parent company RBS also provides services for the company, and conversely Müller has been operating on RBS routes in the Ludwigsburg district for some time. Besides the depot in Schwäbisch Hall, FMO has original operating locations in Bühlertann, Crailsheim, Ellwangen and Marbach, where buses are stationed. Since December 2023, there have been additional locations in Heilbronn, Abstatt, Gundelsheim, Dahenfeld and Weinsberg. As of August 2019, the services of all route bundles covered around 18 million kilometres per year. The company's own fleet had grown to more than 150 buses. In Böblingen and Ludwigsburg, FMO uses RBS depots; in Tübingen, the RAB depot; and in Backnang, it rents space from OVR. Further operating locations have been added in Beilstein, Besigheim, Bruchsal, Bühl, Leinfelden-Echterdingen, Oberstenfeld, Sachsenheim, Vaihingen an der Enz and Waghäusel. The former RBS ServiceCenter Backnang, which serves as a customer contact point, continues to be operated by FMO. From 1 June 2023, the takeover of the remaining services of parent company RBS led to a new FMO Regionalcenter in Aalen, and from 1 December 2023 also in Heilbronn. Since 1 September 2023, FMO has also operated routes 169, 181, 182, 183, 185, 193 and 195 in and around Nürtingen. The previous operator was Omnibusverkehr Kirchheim (OVK), a subsidiary of Omnibus Dannenmann. The contract runs until 31 December 2028. On 1 January 2025, FMO lost the Backnang city transport with routes 359, 360, 361, 362, 362A, 363, 368, 368A, 369, 370 and N36 after six years back to the former operator, Omnibus-Verkehr Ruoff. On 1 July 2025, FMO took over routes 201, 201A, 202, 204, 206, 206A and the new night bus route N24 from Fischle in Waiblingen and surroundings (route bundle Rems-Murr 2 "Unteres Remstal"). FMO will initially operate this route bundle with diesel buses but will gradually switch to buses with water...
