Overview

The Old Regent Ballroom is a vintage-themed event venue located in the heart of Stanford-le-Hope, Essex, in the United Kingdom. It operates from a building with a rich history: originally opened in February 1935 as the Regent Cinema, an independent film house owned by Mr. T. J. Boyce and Mr. W. J. Boyce. The cinema, which also featured a stage, played second-run films and had 585 seats. It closed in the 1970s and was converted into The Regent Leisure Centre, with a snooker hall on the upper floor and a bingo club below; later, Riley's replaced the bingo seating with pool tables. After the snooker halls had been empty for several years, the building was extensively refurbished and reopened in September 2010 as The Old Regent Ballroom. The business was established as a dancing and live entertainment venue in 2011. Since then, it has hosted hundreds of parties, celebrations, and events. The venue is now also licensed to hold wedding and civil ceremonies. Its facilities include an upstairs Ballroom, refurbished in 2013 and decorated to a high standard, a Piano Bar, and a premium foyer cocktail bar known as The Regent. The Old Regent Ballroom offers event hire and catering services for a wide range of occasions, including weddings, civil partnerships, gay weddings, birthdays, christenings, engagements, funerals and wakes, baby showers, tribute nights, seasonal events, fundraising and charity events, and live acts and performances. It positions itself as a stunningly attractive venue in the area, combining vintage charm with modern amenities.

History

The building that now houses The Old Regent Ballroom began its life as the Regent Cinema, which first opened in February 1935. It was an independent film house owned by Mr. T. J. Boyce and Mr. W. J. Boyce. Unusually for a cinema of its time, it was equipped with a stage as well as a single dressing area. While the larger cinema in Grays, Essex, played first-run films, the Regent screened only second-run movies. Its first public film was '20 Million Sweethearts' starring Ginger Rogers and Dick Powell. The cinema had 585 seats. During the 1970s, the Regent Cinema closed and was converted into The Regent Leisure Centre, with an upper floor installed. The first floor became a snooker hall, and the lower floor housed a bingo club. Later, Riley's removed the bingo seating and replaced it with pool tables. The old snooker halls remained empty for a few years and were partially derelict. In September 2010, the building was extensively refurbished and reopened as The Old Regent Ballroom. The business was established as a dancing and live entertainment venue in 2011. Since then, it has hosted hundreds of parties, celebrations, and events. The upstairs Ballroom was completely refurbished in 2013 and decorated to a high standard. The venue is now also licensed to hold wedding and civil ceremonies. It features a Ballroom, a Piano Bar, and a premium foyer cocktail bar called The Regent. The Old Regent Ballroom offers event hire and catering for a wide range of occasions, including weddings, civil partnerships, gay weddings, birthdays, christenings, engagements, funerals and wakes, baby showers, tribute nights, seasonal events, fundraising and charity events, and live acts and performances.
