Overview

OKSH mediaHub Kiel (until May 2026: Offener Kanal Kiel, short: OK Kiel) is a public-access community media institution in Kiel, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. It is a facility of the Offener Kanal Schleswig-Holstein A.ö.R. (OKSH), a public-law corporation, and operates the television channel Kiel TV and the radio station Kiel FM, along with a MakerSpace and media-literacy offerings. The hub is part of the Bürgerrundfunk (citizens' broadcasting) system, funded largely through the German broadcasting fee (Rundfunkbeitrag). The mediaHub Kiel provides citizens in Schleswig-Holstein, Hamburg and the Region Syddanmark in Denmark with the opportunity to independently produce their own radio and television programming. Users are responsible for the content they produce and broadcast. The institution's stated goals are to convey media competence, social competence and political education, and to contribute to training and qualification, thereby helping to implement Article 5 Paragraph 1 of the German Basic Law, which guarantees freedom of expression. To this end, around 100 seminars, workshops and other courses are offered annually, in person and online, free of charge. On request, application-specific individual and group consultations are also available. The hub provides studios and equipment for loan free of charge and instructs users in its operation. The team consists of coordinators, media assistants, working students, trainees and FSJ volunteers. Kiel TV first went on air on 16 December 1991 in the Kiel cable network; since 2008 it has also been available as a worldwide online livestream. Radio Kiel FM began broadcasting on 31 May 2002 with the claim "Alles ist drin", changed in mid-May 2013 to "Die Stimme, die ich kenn'", and since August 2018 has used "Einmalig anders". Station voice is Leif Prengel. On 29 May 2026, a relaunch renamed the OKSH institution's facilities statewide as "OKSH mediaHubs", supplementing classic radio and TV channels with new media formats including (video) podcasts, further media-literacy offerings, and "Freiraum" labs for testing open-source technologies. The Kiel mediaHub's TV studio was rebuilt and expanded as part of this relaunch. Programming on Kiel TV and Kiel FM is produced by citizens, some of whom form editorial groups. Broadcast slots are available to all registered users, though some slots are permanently assigned; to apply for such a fixed slot, one must have regularly produced programs and completed them on the agreed broadcast date. Kiel TV carries recordings of contemporary cultural events such as concerts, exhibitions, literary readings and theater performances by amateur stages and schools, as well as mostly unabridged recordings of public lectures and discussions on society, art and culture, science, business and politics. It live-broadcasts political bodies including the Kiel and Neumünster city councils, the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district council and the Schleswig-Holstein state parliament. Kiel FM's programming is largely mixed, with users deciding content and music. Campus radio editorial groups from Kiel's two largest universities broadcast regularly: Campusradio Kiel (formerly Campusradio Indiewelle) from Christian-Albrechts-Universität since 13 June 2003, and Campus RadioAktiv from Fachhochschule Kiel since 1 June 2006. "Random Radio", moderated by Lucas Wecker and Marlon Heller, has aired Fridays at 7 pm since 2015. External studios in Norderstedt and Pinneberg broadcast school radio together with Hamburg's TIDE radio. During Kieler Woche, a special event radio program replaces the regular schedule.

History

The Offene Kanal Kiel (OK Kiel) began with its television programming on Kiel TV, which first went on air on 16 December 1991 in the Kiel cable network. Since 2008, Kiel TV has also been available as a worldwide online livestream. The radio station Kiel FM started broadcasting on 31 May 2002 with the claim "Alles ist drin". In mid-May 2013 the claim was changed to "Die Stimme, die ich kenn'", and since August 2018 it has been "Einmalig anders"; the station voice is Leif Prengel. Campus radio groups became part of the schedule: Campusradio Kiel (then Campusradio Indiewelle) from Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel began on 13 June 2003, and Campus RadioAktiv from Fachhochschule Kiel on 1 June 2006. The talk show "Lass mal schnacken" has been produced by a group of users at Kiel TV since February 2012, reaching 475 episodes by September 2024. The music show "Nightlife Nightlive", a four-hour program with scene music, mostly live, has aired on the last Saturday of each month since 1996. "Random Radio", moderated by Lucas Wecker and Marlon Heller, has been broadcast Fridays at 7 pm since 2015. In September 2024, SDTV broadcasting was discontinued and the program is now transmitted exclusively as an HDTV signal. On 29 May 2026, a relaunch renamed the facilities of the Offener Kanal Schleswig-Holstein AöR statewide as "OKSH mediaHubs". The classic radio and TV channels are to be supplemented by new media formats, including possibilities for producing (video) podcasts, further media competence offerings, and so-called "Freiraum" labs where open-source technologies can be tested. As part of this relaunch, the television studio of the Kiel mediaHub was rebuilt and expanded.
