Overview

Oficyna Wydawnicza Volumen is a Polish independent publishing house founded in 1989 by Mirosława Łątkowska and Adam Borowski. It continues the tradition of the underground publishing movement, specifically the Niezależne Wydawnictwo Książkowe Wers and Prawy Margines. The publisher specialises in books on Polish history, world history, cultural anthropology and broadly defined humanistic thought, and is known for academic textbooks in these fields. Volumen has collaborated with several other Polish publishers, including Bellona, Marabut, Alfa, Wydawnictwa Szkolne i Pedagogiczne, Niezależna Oficyna Wydawnicza, Dom Wydawniczo-Księgarski Klon, and Instytut Wydawniczy "Pax", as well as with the Stowarzyszenie Pokolenie and Liga Republikańska. Its books appear in a number of series, such as Nowa Marianna, O Wolność i Niepodległość, Czarna, Alfa i Omega, Piękne Książki, Podróże po Historii, Historia Najnowsza, Tworzenie Europy (unfinished, closed), and Człowiek i Społeczeństwo (W Kręgu Codzienności) (closed). In 2009 it launched a textbook series, separating classic academic textbooks into it. It has also published several books in the Podróżnicy mimo woli collection and co-published some titles in the Średniowiecze series of the Marabut publishing house. It also has a collection of albums on recent history. Volumen was the first co-publisher of the Brostiana and Klio w Niemczech series. The latter is part of a translation project of the German Historical Institute in Warsaw, aiming to present the most interesting phenomena of post-war German historiography. The parallel series Klio in Polen popularises Polish historical literature in Germany. Volumen published the first five volumes of this series. In the early 1990s it carried out an extensive editorial project of the University of Wrocław concerning the history of Silesia. In the Nowa Marianna (La Nouvelle Marianne) series, the publisher released a number of now unique titles, making available to Polish readers works by outstanding French historians and scholars, mainly in the field of medieval studies. The O Wolność i Niepodległość series features fundamental monographs of Polish historiography – works of great historians of the Second Polish Republic, never reissued in the Polish People's Republic, as well as monographs of anti-communist armed underground units and contemporary works on topics forbidden until 1989. The Czarna series is a series of essays from various fields of the humanities, diverse in both subject matter and level of substantive reflection. In the Alfa i Omega series, the publisher intended to present small books containing a "pill" of knowledge on issues from many areas of life and science; the series has not been published since 2001. Volumen also publishes fiction, which began in 1996 with Piotr Bednarski's book Błękitne śniegi (translated into several languages; a new, expanded edition appeared in 2011), as well as non-fiction. Volumen is the initiator and co-publisher of the Encyklopedia Solidarności. In 2009, in cooperation with Bellona, it realised the anniversary project Kanon Literatury Podziemnej. The publishing house remains active, with its bookstore and events programme. Its website lists upcoming meetings with authors and new releases, and it continues to publish books on history and the humanities.
