Overview
The Office universitaire de recherche socialiste (OURS) is a French research centre and archive founded in 1969 by Guy Mollet. It is a non-profit association under the French law of 1901, dedicated to theoretical and historical research on socialism and broader human and societal questions. The OURS operates a library and archive centre, publishes regular periodicals, hosts meetings at its headquarters, and organises annual conferences and public events in partnership with other research institutions. It is neither a political party nor a political current, and it explicitly refrains from taking positions on current political affairs or strategy. The organisation is based in Paris and maintains an active publishing programme, including its monthly journal L'OURS and the review Recherche socialiste. Its current president is Alain Bergounioux, with Denis Lefebvre as secretary-general and Frédéric Cépède as editorial secretary. The OURS serves as a key repository for socialist archives and a hub for scholarly exchange on the history and ideas of socialism.
History
The Office universitaire de recherche socialiste (OURS) was founded in 1969 by Guy Mollet, a prominent French socialist politician. It was established as a research centre and archive dedicated to the study of socialism and broader human and societal problems. From its inception, the OURS has been a non-profit association under the French law of 1901. Its first president was Guy Mollet, who led the organisation until 1975. He was succeeded by Jacques Piette (1975–1978), Adrien Spinetta (1978–1990), Claude Fuzier (1990–1997), and Pierre Guidoni (1997–2000). Alain Bergounioux is the current president. The organisation has consistently published a monthly journal, L'OURS, since 1969, and in 1997 it launched the review Recherche socialiste, initially quarterly and now semi-annual. The OURS also publishes books and collective works, often in partnership with other research structures. It maintains a library and archive centre in Paris, open to members and researchers. Over the decades, the OURS has organised numerous conferences and public events, including annual seminars and colloquia. It remains a key institution for the preservation and study of French socialist history.
