History

Obwaldner Kantonalbank began its business activity in 1886 in Sarnen, next to the village chapel on the ground floor of Dr. Peter Anton Ming's house. The cantonal council elected Major Paul von Moos of Sachseln as the first director and Felix Stockmann of Sarnen as the first cashier, and the Federal Council authorized the canton of Obwalden to issue banknotes. The first Einnehmerei (receiving office) began operating in Engelberg in 1903, followed by Lungern in 1904 and Kerns in 1908. In 1909 the bank opened its headquarters on Bahnhofstrasse in Sarnen. The Einnehmerei in Alpnach opened in 1931, and those in Giswil and Sachseln began operating in 1932. A new cantonal bank law came into force in 1974. The Sarnen-Center branch celebrated its opening in 1998. In 2003 the bank received the SME Oscar launched by FDP Switzerland, presented by Federal Councillor Pascal Couchepin. In 2005 flooding in Obwalden inundated the village center of Sarnen, including the basement levels and the entire counter area of the headquarters. In 2012 the bank moved its headquarters from Bahnhofstrasse to a temporary location at Rütistrasse 8 in Sarnen, while a branch remained on site. In 2019 the property on Bahnhofstrasse in Sarnen was sold, and the bank left its more than 100-year-old location for good. After around two years of construction, on 30 August 2021 the bank moved into its new headquarters 'Quadrum' at Im Feld 2 in Sarnen Nord. On 1 May 2022 Margrit Koch took over as CEO, succeeding Bruno Thürig, who had decided to leave the bank after twenty years at its head.
