Overview

The Obra Cultural de l'Alguer (OCA) is a non-profit cultural association founded in 1985 in Alghero, Sardinia, Italy. Its fundamental purpose is to promote Algherese culture and, above all, the linguistic distinctiveness of the Catalan language as spoken in Alghero. The organisation works to advance the cultural role of the Catalan community of Alghero within a socio-political and economic framework, with a Mediterranean scope, favouring relations between emerging nationalities and in particular between Alghero and the Catalan-speaking countries. The OCA organises a wide range of cultural activities, including conventions and debates, the Diada de la cultura, meetings with book authors, and several recurring awards. Every two years it organises the Premi Josep Sanna for degree theses and unpublished works on the territory, history, language and culture of Alghero, in collaboration with the Escola d'Alguerès Pascual Scanu. Annually it organises the Rafael Sari poetry and prose prize, the 'Una cançó per a l'Alguer' prize, and the photographic prize 'L'Alguer, la gent, el territori'. Since 1988 the OCA has promoted the Biblioteca Catalana de l'Alguer, which receives support from the regional government of Sardinia and donations from the Generalitat de Catalunya, and holds more than 10,000 volumes. The association publishes in Catalan, collaborates with newspapers and other training bodies, research institutes, universities and cultural associations, organises performances with the Grup Teatral El Teló, musical shows of Algherese songs and lyric poetry. It also provides assistance and translation services for schools in Alghero and university students, and offers a language translation service for all Algherese people. The Generalitat de Catalunya regards the OCA as an entity that 'from civil society and over time has become a defender of the past, present and future of Catalan culture, language and identity', alongside Òmnium Cultural, the Ateneu Barcelonès, Acció Cultural del País Valencià (ACPV), the Obra Cultural Balear (OCB), and the Centre de Cultura Catalana d'Andorra.

History

The Obra Cultural de l'Alguer (OCA) was founded in 1985 in Alghero, Sardinia, as a non-profit association. Its fundamental aim was to promote Algherese culture and especially the linguistic peculiarity of Catalan as spoken in Alghero. From its inception, the OCA sought to promote the cultural function of the Catalan community of Alghero within a socio-political and economic programming framework, in the Mediterranean sphere in general, privileging relations between emerging nationalities and in particular relations between Alghero and the Catalan-speaking countries. In 1988 the OCA began promoting the Biblioteca Catalana de l'Alguer, which has received support from the regional government of Sardinia and donations from the Generalitat de Catalunya, and now holds more than 10,000 volumes. Over the years, the OCA has organised numerous cultural activities, including conventions and debates, the Diada de la cultura, and meetings with book authors. It organises the Premi Josep Sanna every two years for degree theses and unpublished works on the territory, history, language and culture of Alghero, in collaboration with the Escola d'Alguerès Pascual Scanu. It also organises annual prizes: the Rafael Sari poetry and prose prize, the 'Una cançó per a l'Alguer' prize, and the photographic prize 'L'Alguer, la gent, el territori'. The OCA publishes in Catalan, collaborates with newspapers and other training bodies, research institutes, universities and cultural associations, and organises performances with the Grup Teatral El Teló, as well as musical shows of Algherese songs and lyric poetry. It provides assistance and translation services for schools in Alghero and university students, and offers a language translation service for all Algherese people. The Generalitat de Catalunya considers the OCA, together with Òmnium Cultural, the Ateneu Barcelonès, Acció Cultural del País Valencià (ACPV), the Obra Cultural Balear (OCB), and the Centre de Cultura Catalana d'Andorra, as an entity that 'from civil society and over time has become a defender of the past, present and future of Catalan culture, language and identity'.
