Overview
Obermayr Holzkonstruktionen Gesellschaft m.b.H. is an Austrian timber construction firm based in Schwanenstadt, Upper Austria. Founded in 1933 by Johann Obermayr as a carpentry business with a sawmill and planing mill, the company has grown into a specialist in engineered timber products and timber building systems. Its core activities include the production of glued laminated timber (formerly known as Hetzerträger), timber roof and facade elements, and the delivery of complete timber construction solutions for commercial, industrial and public buildings. The company's history is marked by continuous adaptation. After a fire destroyed the original carpentry workshop in 1948, it was rebuilt by 1950. In 1958, Obermayr began producing parquet and ship flooring, a line that was discontinued in 1997. In 1959, the firm was among the first in Austria to produce glued laminated timber. The sawmill was shut down and demolished in 1998, making way for a new production hall and a lamella storage hall. In 1999, Obermayr entered timber element construction, completing its first project, a three-storey office building for Tilo Schrattenecker GmbH in Lohnsburg, which won the Upper Austrian provincial culture prize 'Bauwerk des Jahres' in 2000. Further notable projects include the Höss Halle in Hinterstoder, recognised in 2003. Today, Obermayr Holzkonstruktionen operates from its headquarters in Schwanenstadt and serves the Austrian market. The company remains privately held and is known for its expertise in timber engineering, roof and facade systems, and sustainable building with wood. Its website emphasises the versatility and growth of wood as a construction material, reflecting the firm's long-standing commitment to the timber industry.
History
Obermayr Holzkonstruktionen Gesellschaft m.b.H. was founded in 1933 by Johann Obermayr as a carpentry business with a sawmill and planing mill on Johann-Pabst-Straße in Schwanenstadt, Upper Austria. In the early years, the company undertook structural timber work, including the falsework for the Traunfall Bridge in 1947 and the Bärental Bridge in 1956, which spans the A1 motorway near Thalgau. In 1948, the carpentry workshop was destroyed by arson and was rebuilt under difficult post-war conditions by 1950. The assembly yard was still outdoors at that time. In 1954, an office and garage building was constructed. In 1958, Johann Obermayr began the production of parquet and ship flooring, adding a third production line and also starting the trade and installation of various floorings. Flooring production ceased in 1997, while installation continued until 2015. In 1959, Obermayr recognised the potential of Hetzerträger—today known as glued laminated timber—and began producing them as one of the first companies in Austria. In 1998, the sawmill was shut down and demolished, creating space for a lamella storage hall and a new production hall. In 1999, the company started timber element construction, with its first project being a three-storey office building for Tilo Schrattenecker GmbH in Lohnsburg (architects Riepl Riepl). This building received the Upper Austrian provincial culture prize 'Bauwerk des Jahres' in 2000. In 2003, the company was recognised for the Höss Halle in Hinterstoder, a challenging timber element project featuring a transparent ground floor and a large cantilever on the upper floor. The company continues to operate from Schwanenstadt, focusing on glued laminated timber, timber elements, and roof and facade systems.
