Overview

Oberhütte am See is a family-owned alpine mountain hut and hospitality brand located at 1,860 metres above sea level in the Schladminger and Radstädter Tauern mountains of Salzburg, Austria. Situated directly north-northwest of the Oberhüttensee and the Oberhüttensattel, it serves as an alpine base on the Tauernhöhenweg, roughly halfway between the Ignaz-Mattis-Hütte and the winter sports resort of Obertauern. The hut has been in the possession of the Oberkofler family since 1974 and is currently run by Familie Franz Oberkofler. The brand's offering centres on traditional Austrian mountain hospitality: a sun terrace, regional specialities sourced from the family's own farm, and accommodation for up to 30 guests in alpine rooms and hut dormitories. It is marketed as a destination for hikers and mountain bikers, whether arriving after a long trek or simply for an afternoon coffee. Five marked hiking routes lead to the Oberhütte, and the nearby Oberhüttensee offers swimming in summer. The hut is a member of the Salzburger Almsommer (Salzburg Alpine Summer) programme and is also a checkpoint on the Stoneman Taurista mountain bike route. As a commercial entity, Oberhütte operates as a private family business rather than a listed company. Its brand identity is tied to its location, its family ownership, and its role in the regional alpine tourism and outdoor recreation market. The business is reachable for reservations by telephone and maintains a website at oberhuette.at.

History

The Oberhütte is a private alpine shelter (Schutzhütte) in the Schladminger Tauern of the Austrian federal state of Salzburg. It lies immediately north-northwest of the Oberhüttensee and the Oberhüttensattel at an elevation of 1,869 m above sea level, approximately halfway between the Ignaz-Mattis-Hütte and the winter sports resort of Obertauern on the Tauernhöhenweg, part of the Zentralalpenweg. It thus serves as an alpine base on that route. Since 1974, the Oberhütte am See has been in family ownership. The current hosts are the family of Franz Oberkofler, who run the hut as a hospitality business. The ascent to the hut leads from Schladming westward to Forstau, then southward along the Forstaubach over the Vögeialm. From the Oberhütte, various tours and summit climbs are possible: over the Seekarhaus to or from Obertauern (1½ hours), over the Granglerhütte to Weißpriach (2½ hours), and the ascent of the Steirische and Lungauer Kalkspitze in about 1½ hours' walking time. The hut is listed in alpine literature, including Hans Führer's 'Tauern-Höhenweg' (Rother Wanderführer, Munich 2005) and on the Alpenvereinskarte 1:50,000 sheet 45/2, Niedere Tauern II. Today it operates as a member of the Salzburger Almsommer programme and as a checkpoint on the Stoneman Taurista mountain bike route, offering accommodation for up to 30 guests in alpine rooms and hut dormitories, a sun terrace, and regional cuisine from the family's own farm.
