Overview
The Oberösterreichische Gesundheitsholding GmbH (OÖG) is the state-owned hospital and healthcare group of Upper Austria. It is the legal successor of the Oö. Gesundheits- und Spitals-AG (gespag), which was founded in 2001 and re-established as Oberösterreichische Gesundheitsholding GmbH on 1 October 2018. The company is owned by the Province of Upper Austria through OÖ Landesholding GmbH and is headquartered in Linz. The OÖG operates the Kepler University Hospital in Linz, five regional clinics at eight locations (Salzkammergut Klinikum, Pyhrn-Eisenwurzen Klinikum, Klinikum Freistadt, Klinikum Rohrbach, Klinikum Schärding), and a school for health and nursing care at each clinic site. It also holds interests in rehabilitation centres, a medical simulation and training centre, a university of applied sciences for health professions, and residential care centres. Together with its majority holdings, the group employs more than 17,000 people. As a public healthcare provider, the OÖG focuses on close-to-home medical care across Upper Austria, combining acute inpatient care, outpatient services, nursing education, and rehabilitation. Its portfolio includes the LKV Krankenhaus Errichtungs- und Vermietungs-GmbH, the Oö. Landespflege- und Betreuungszentren GmbH, and the Medizinisches Simulations- und Trainingszentrum OÖ GmbH, among others. The group is a key pillar of the Austrian public health system in the province.
History
The Oberösterreichische Gesundheitsholding GmbH (OÖG) traces its origins to the Oö. Gesundheits- und Spitals-AG (gespag), founded in 2001. The gespag was established as a joint-stock company to manage and operate hospitals owned by the Province of Upper Austria. On 1 October 2018, the gespag was re-established as Oberösterreichische Gesundheitsholding GmbH, adopting its current name and legal form. The company is wholly owned by the Province of Upper Austria through OÖ Landesholding GmbH and is headquartered in Linz. Since its re-establishment, the OÖG has consolidated its hospital network. It operates the Kepler University Hospital in Linz (100% participation), the Salzkammergut Klinikum at Bad Ischl, Gmunden and Vöcklabruck, the Pyhrn-Eisenwurzen Klinikum at Steyr and Kirchdorf (since 1 January 2020), and the Kliniken Freistadt, Rohrbach and Schärding. At each clinic site, the OÖG runs a school for health and nursing care. The group also holds a range of participations: Kepler Universitätsklinikum GmbH (100%), Oö. Landespflege- und Betreuungszentren GmbH (100%) with locations at Schloss Gschwendt, Schloss Haus and Christkindl (and until 2026 Schloss Cumberland), LKV Krankenhaus Errichtungs- und Vermietungs-GmbH (100%, of which 19% via Kepler Universitätsklinikum GmbH and 81% via OÖG), Medizinisches Simulations- und Trainingszentrum OÖ GmbH (100%), FH Gesundheitsberufe OÖ GmbH (79.83%, of which 27.33% via Kepler Universitätsklinikum GmbH and 52.5% via OÖG), SVS Gesundheitszentrum Linz Betriebs-GmbH (49%), Rehaklinik Gmundnerberg GmbH (40%), Kinder-Reha Rohrbach-Berg GmbH (35%), Rehaklinik Enns GmbH (33%), MR-Institut Gmunden GmbH (25%) and St. Barbara Hospiz GmbH (19%). In the Oberösterreichische Gesundheitsholding and its majority holdings, more than 17,000 people are employed. The group continues to invest in infrastructure, as shown by recent projects such as the new operative intensive care centre at Pyhrn-Eisenwurzen Klinikum Steyr and the topping-out ceremony for Klinikum Freistadt.
