Overview

Oakla Publishing Co., Ltd. (株式会社オークラ出版) is a Japanese publishing company headquartered in Meguro, Tokyo. It was established in April 1990 as an editing production company, evolving from Oaklaンド (Oakland), a company founded in April 1981. The company began full-scale publishing in January 1995 after contracting with major distributors. Over the decades, it has built a diverse catalogue spanning magazines, books, manga, and literary bunko labels. Its flagship periodicals include BUHI, a specialized magazine for French Bulldog enthusiasts, and 韓流Scandal, a magazine dedicated to Korean wave (Hallyu) culture. The company also operates several imprints such as Akatsuki Press (books), Magnolia Books and Magnolia Romance (translated overseas mystery and romance), Prism Bunko (boys' love novels), Ever Princess and Ever Romance (teen's love novels), and manga labels like Minty Comics, Aqua Comics, and enigma Comics. In 2004, it absorbed Sakurado Shobo, and in 2009 it underwent a corporate restructuring that transferred its publishing business to Oaklaンド, which then renamed itself Oakla Publishing, while the former Oakla Publishing became NM Building. The founder, Masahiro Nagashima, passed away in 2013, and his wife, Utsugi Nagashima, took over as representative director. The company also has ties to renewable energy through its affiliate NM.PLANT, which established a mega-solar power plant in Namegata, Ibaraki in 2013. Today, Oakla Publishing continues to publish a wide range of content, including digital manga and e-books, and maintains a strong presence in niche markets such as boys' love, teen's love, and Korean entertainment.

History

Oakla Publishing traces its origins to April 1981, when Oaklaンド (Oakland) was established as a limited company. In April 1990, Oakla Publishing Co., Ltd. was founded as an editing production company. The company began publishing in January 1995 after signing contracts with major distributors, and in December of that year moved its headquarters from Meguro to Chiyoda. In May 2003, the headquarters returned to Meguro. In April 2004, it absorbed Sakurado Shobo, a related company that had faced management difficulties. A significant restructuring occurred in April 2009: through an absorption-type split, the publishing business rights and obligations of Oakla Publishing were transferred to Oaklaンド, which then changed its name to Oakla Publishing, while the former Oakla Publishing was renamed NM Building Co., Ltd. In July 2013, the founder and then-representative director Masahiro Nagashima died suddenly; his wife, Utsugi Nagashima, succeeded him. Also in July 2013, affiliate NM.PLANT established a mega-solar power plant in Namegata, Ibaraki. In July 2017, the subsidiary Oakla Publishing absorbed Oaks Co., Ltd. Throughout its history, Oakla Publishing has expanded its catalogue to include magazines like BUHI (French Bulldog) and 韓流Scandal (Korean wave), as well as numerous book and manga imprints such as Akatsuki Press, Magnolia Romance, Magnolia Books, Prism Bunko, Ever Princess, Ever Romance, Minty Comics, Aqua Comics, and enigma Comics. The company has also embraced digital publishing, offering e-books and digital comics.
