Overview
O-M Ltd. (株式会社オーエム製作所) is a Japanese machine tool manufacturer headquartered in Yodogawa-ku, Osaka. The company traces its origins to 1920, when Osaka Machinery Works was established, and to 1949, when Yamato Machinery Industry Co., Ltd. was founded as a textile machinery maker. In 1960 the two businesses merged, taking over the production of machine tools and automatic packaging machinery and forming the present O-M organization. O-M develops, manufactures and sells machine tools and other industrial machinery, with a product line centered on vertical lathes (立旋盤) and turning centers, alongside other specialized machines. Its equipment serves heavy, large-scale industries such as railways, power generation and aircraft, as well as precision parts machining. The company positions itself on precision machining technology and the globally recognized O-M brand, and it has extended its domestic product warranty for vertical lathes and turning centers from one year to three years. O-M operates a head office in Osaka, a main manufacturing plant in Nagaoka (Niigata Prefecture), an office in Shinji (Shimane Prefecture), and sales offices in Tokyo, Nagoya, Harima and Niigata. Overseas, it maintains O-M (U.S.A.), Inc. in East Dundee, Illinois, and O-M Shanghai (欧安睦(上海)商貿有限公司) in Shanghai, China. As of March 31, 2026, the company reported consolidated capital of 1.66 billion yen, 520 consolidated employees (including 35 temporary employees) and consolidated sales of 14.4 billion yen. Its president is Hiroshi Mizuta (水田 博). O-M is also an official club partner of Albirex Niigata, reflecting its ties to its Nagaoka manufacturing base.
History
O-M Ltd. traces its roots to two predecessor companies. Osaka Machinery Works was established in 1920, and in 1949 Yamato Machinery Industry Co., Ltd. was founded as a textile machinery manufacturer. In 1960, the two companies merged, and the combined entity took over the production of machine tools and automatic packaging machinery, forming the basis of today's O-M organization. Over the decades that followed, O-M developed and manufactured machine tools and other industrial machinery, building a product line centered on vertical lathes and turning centers. The company expanded its manufacturing and sales footprint across Japan, with a major plant in Nagaoka, Niigata Prefecture, and sales offices in Tokyo, Nagoya, Harima and Niigata, as well as an office in Shinji, Shimane Prefecture. Internationally, O-M established O-M (U.S.A.), Inc. in East Dundee, Illinois, and O-M Shanghai (欧安睦(上海)商貿有限公司) in Shanghai, China, to serve overseas customers. In recent years the company has continued to invest in its production base, including the completion and start of operation of the M5 factory expansion at its Nagaoka Plant in December 2024, and the opening of a new employee cafeteria there in October 2023. It has also maintained a presence at major trade shows such as JIMTOF and Mechatrotech Japan, and in 2025 disclosed a ransomware incident with a possible personal information leak. As of March 31, 2026, O-M reported consolidated capital of 1.66 billion yen, 520 consolidated employees (including 35 temporary employees) and consolidated sales of 14.4 billion yen. The company is led by President and Representative Director Hiroshi Mizuta.
