Overview
OÖ Seilbahnholding GmbH is the holding company through which the Austrian federal state of Upper Austria organises its participations in tourism infrastructure, particularly cable cars and ski lifts. It is a wholly-owned subsidiary of OÖ Landesholding GmbH, the state's central holding entity, and is headquartered in Pinsdorf, Upper Austria. The company acts as an industry holding: its stated purpose is to provide services for the operational and strategic management of cable car and lift facilities in its associated companies, following the guidelines of the Upper Austrian state tourism concept (Kursbuch Tourismus Oberösterreich). The group operates primarily in the Salzkammergut region and, with around one million guests per year across its companies, ranks among the largest tourism businesses in Upper Austria. Its locations include Dachstein West (Gosau, Russbach and Annaberg), Feuerkogel in Ebensee, Grünberg in Gmunden, Dachstein Krippenstein in Obertraun and Wurbauerkogel in Windischgarsten. In October 2023 the umbrella brand Bergbahnen Dachstein Salzkammergut was founded to better exploit synergy effects; it bundles the brands Dachstein West, Feuerkogel, Grünberg and Dachstein Krippenstein. The group markets itself with the slogan "365 days at the guest" and positions its mountains as year-round destinations for skiing, hiking, cave tours and family recreation. OÖ Seilbahnholding also holds a minority stake in Hinterstoder-Wurzeralm Bergbahnen AG, whose majority is held by the Schröcksnadel group. The holding's own incoming office serves as the sales centre for all affiliated companies and products. Its organisational structure combines divisionalised locations with centralised service functions at the holding level, aiming for uniform strategic orientation and maximum synergy. As a state-owned enterprise, it is a significant employer in the region and an essential driver for the entire Salzkammergut tourism area.
History
Unlike the tourism strongholds of Tyrol and Salzburg, Upper Austria became heavily involved in the development of winter sports after the Second World War. The state participated as a minority shareholder in the founding of Dachstein Tourismus AG in 1947 together with the federal government and the state of Styria, and in 1955 it engaged with a local company in the Grünbergseilbahn as an early public-private partnership project. It also took part in the expansion phase of the 1980s in the Dachstein area. In 1999/2000, as part of denationalisation measures, the cable car operations in Hinterstoder and Spital am Pyhrn were partially privatised and transferred to the Schröcksnadel group. The same investors also took over the Hochficht Bergbahnen in the Mühlviertel in 2000, which had been operated with the Premonstratensians of Schlägl since 1965. In September 2005, OÖ Seilbahnholding was created for all remaining tourism-relevant participations and integrated into OÖ Landesholding, the state's overall participation structure. Originally intended only for cable car holdings, it today manages most of the state's participations in the sector, including other facilities such as hospitality and travel agencies. However, the spa resorts are organised in a separate group, OÖ Thermenholding, and the National Park OÖ Kalkalpen is directly subordinate to the Landesholding. In parallel, the funding strategy shifted from subsidising companies to expanding regional framework conditions. The holding operates primarily in the Salzkammergut. With around one million guests annually across the corporate group, it is now one of the largest tourism businesses in Upper Austria. In October 2023, the umbrella brand Bergbahnen Dachstein Salzkammergut was founded to make better use of synergy effects, bundling the brands Dachstein West, Feuerkogel, Grünberg and Dachstein Krippenstein. The group's own incoming office serves as the sales centre for all affiliated companies and products. The organisational structure is based on a divisionalisation of the locations with centralised service functions in the holding company, ensuring a uniform strategic orientation with the best possible use of synergy effects.
