Overview

Nyangani Renewable Energy (Pvt) Ltd (NRE) is a Zimbabwean independent power producer (IPP) based in Harare. Created in 2007, the company designs, builds, owns and operates run-of-river hydroelectric power schemes and grid-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) power schemes, delivering electricity into the national grids of Zimbabwe and Malawi. Its hydro schemes are located on rivers flowing from the Nyangani Massif in eastern Zimbabwe and from Mount Mulanje in Malawi, while its solar scheme is in Mutoko, Zimbabwe. NRE was formed to improve access to electricity for the resident population of the Honde Valley, an area that was poorly served by the national grid with limited connections and very regular power cuts. Over roughly the last 15 years, the Honde Valley has benefited from consistent, reliable green electricity, which has driven new demand and greatly enhanced the potential of the valley. The Honde Valley is also a net exporter of electricity to Manicaland, where it regularly keeps the lights on in Mutare. According to its own reporting, NRE has built 50MW of generation capacity. Its about page states that it has raised equity and loan capital to build, own and operate 44.3MW of hydroelectric and solar generation projects. In Zimbabwe, NRE has built eight run-of-river hydroelectric power schemes on rivers flowing off the Nyangani massif with an installed capacity of 33MW. In Mutoko, it built a 2.5MW grid-scale solar scheme, which was the first such scheme to connect into the ZETDC grid. In Malawi, NRE constructed an 8.2MW hydroelectric power scheme on a river flowing off Mount Mulanje, supplying electricity into the Malawi national grid. In 2023 NRE became a participating member of the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP), and it now regularly trades on the SAPP market, which was created to enhance cross-border trading of electricity across the region. In 2024, NRE sold 13% of its Zimbabwe generation on SAPP's day-ahead market; all other Zimbabwe generation was sold to ZETDC. In 2025, NRE delivered 162,498 MWh of electricity into the national grids, enough to supply approximately 65,000 homes in the region for a year, and because it was all renewable it reduced carbon emissions by approximately 60,000 metric tonnes of CO2 in 2025. Beyond generation, NRE offers design and construction services and solar services. Its in-house engineering and financial expertise covers project reconnaissance and survey through to operation, including weirs, penstocks, power stations, civils, low- to high-voltage substations, medium-voltage transmission lines, hydroelectric power and solar photovoltaic power. It also offers EPC, maintenance and operation of new and existing solar power stations and systems, with experience in off-grid solar systems ranging from 5kVA to over 100kVA as well as grid-connected and net-metered power plants. NRE supports community empowerment through its work with the Honde Valley Hydroelectric Benevolence Company (Pvt) Limited (HVHEBC), which has, among other community projects, connected 52 schools to the national grid.

History

Nyangani Renewable Energy (Pvt) Ltd (NRE) was created in 2007 as a Zimbabwean independent power producer (IPP). The company was formed to improve access to electricity for the resident population of the Honde Valley, an area that was poorly served by the national grid with limited connections and very regular power cuts. Since 2007, NRE's core business has been to design new renewable energy electricity generation schemes. Once designed, NRE applies to the national energy regulator for an independent power producer licence and to the national grid operator for a supply contract to deliver electricity. On receipt of all permissions, which also include environmental impact assessments and water licences, NRE builds the power schemes and commissions them into the national electricity grid network. NRE has raised equity and loan capital to build, own and operate 44.3MW of hydroelectric and solar generation projects to deliver electricity into the national grids of Zimbabwe and Malawi. In Zimbabwe, NRE has built eight run-of-river hydroelectric power schemes on the rivers flowing off the Nyangani massif with an installed capacity of 33MW. In Mutoko, NRE built a 2.5MW grid-scale solar scheme, which was the first such scheme to connect into the ZETDC grid. In Malawi, NRE constructed an 8.2MW hydroelectric power scheme on a river flowing off Mount Mulanje, supplying electricity into the Malawi national grid. A notable project milestone was the Pungwe B scheme, commissioned at the beginning of February 2015. The scheme has a rated output of 15MW. Its offtake point is at 1,096m above sea level and the turbines are at 915m, giving a head of 181m. The distance from the offtake point to the water returning to the river is 2,000m. The maximum water flow through the penstock is 12,000 litres per second, feeding four turbines each of 3.75MW capacity. The electricity is transmitted into the national grid through a new dedicated 33KV line. Over roughly the last 15 years, the Honde Valley has benefited from consistent reliable green electricity. This has driven new demand and greatly enhanced the potential of the valley. The Honde Valley is also a net exporter of electricity to Manicaland, where it regularly keeps the lights on in Mutare. In 2023 NRE became a participating member of the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP). NRE now regularly trades on the SAPP market, which was created to enhance cross-border trading of electricity across the region. In 2024, NRE sold 13% of its Zimbabwe generation on SAPP's day-ahead market; all other Zimbabwe generation was sold to ZETDC. By 2025, NRE reported having built 50MW of generation capacity. In 2025 it delivered 162,498 MWh of electricity into the national grids, enough to supply approximately 65,000 homes in the region with electricity for a year, and because it was all from renewable electricity, it reduced carbon emissions by approximately 60,000 metric tonnes of CO2 in 2025. NRE also supports community empowerment through its work with the Honde Valley Hydroelectric Benevolence Company (Pvt) Limited (HVHEBC), which has, among other community projects, connected 52 schools to the national grid.
