Overview

N.V. Uniformpettenfabriek v/h Fa. A. Hassing — commonly known simply as Hassing — is a Dutch family business that has specialised in the design, development, production and shipping of uniform hats since 1894. From its base in Nijkerk, the company describes itself as the only manufacturer in the Netherlands that still produces uniform hats, and it presents itself as a specialist in headgear with more than a century of accumulated experience. Its work spans the full chain from design and material management through cutting, manufacturing, assembly, final inspection and shipping, with every hat manually inspected for size, appearance and durability before it leaves the factory. Hassing's origins lie in a factory opened in Purmerend in 1894 by Anthonius Hassing and his two sons for uniforms and uniform hats. One of those sons, Julius, moved the business to the garrison city of Amersfoort in 1897, where it grew and diversified beyond headgear into items such as spurs, swords, handcuffs and pistols. After the death of Julius Hassing's son, Anthonius Hassing, the company was taken over in 1978 by Ab Have, an employee of barely two years' standing. In 1985, responding to overwhelming demand, Hassing opened a factory in Tunisia so that production could continue outside Amersfoort. The company later relocated its Dutch operations to Nijkerk, where it is based today. Hassing sells into the international market. In addition to the Netherlands, Germany, France and Scandinavia are described as important markets. Its clientele is deliberately diverse and demanding: the Dutch royal house, the Dutch army, the German army, the Swiss army, the French army, police forces in several countries, customs services, companies specialising in ceremonial uniforms, other uniform manufacturers, and hotel businesses. Working with authorities such as armies, police forces, fire brigades and the Dutch royal house has accustomed the firm to high quality standards, and it emphasises stringent quality assurance from the design phase through to delivery, specialist craftsmanship, and clear, straightforward dealings with customers. Product-wise, Hassing focuses on uniform hats made by hand and of superb quality, supported by a range of accessories made from the best materials. The company's production line is organised into six stages — material management, cutting, manufacturing, assembly, final inspection and shipping — and it notes that an average hat contains around 26 components, each made to precise measurements. Small orders are cut in Nijkerk, while large orders are sent to the company's foreign production facility. Hassing remains a family business and continues to trade under the historic name N.V. Uniformpettenfabriek v/h Fa. A. Hassing.

History

Hassing traces its history to 1894, when Anthonius Hassing and his two sons opened a factory in Purmerend for uniforms and uniform hats. Three years later, in 1897, one of Anthonius's sons, Julius, anticipated better market opportunities in the garrison city of Amersfoort and established himself on Lange Beekstraat there. The business immediately took off, and he quickly had to move to larger premises on Arnhemseweg. By 1939 the Amersfoort establishment was more than just a uniform-hat operation: Julius Hassing also supplied and produced spurs, swords, handcuffs and pistols alongside uniform hats. The company remained in family hands until, soon after the death of Julius Hassing's son, Anthonius Hassing, a search began for someone to take over the business. Ab Have, who had scarcely worked two years at the company, voiced his interest in taking over; once the bank approved, the takeover was quickly finalised in 1978. In 1985, due to overwhelming demand, it became impossible to continue producing everything in Amersfoort, and after thorough discussion Hassing decided to open a factory in Tunisia. The company subsequently established its present Dutch base in Nijkerk, from which it continues to design, develop, produce and ship headgear. Over more than a century, Hassing has built its reputation on uniform hats in particular. It states that it is now the only manufacturer in the Netherlands that produces uniform hats, and it has worked with authorities including the army, police forces, fire brigades and the Dutch royal house, as well as with the German, Swiss and French armies, customs services, ceremonial-uniform specialists, other uniform manufacturers and hotel businesses. Its production line has been continuously optimised since 1894 and is divided into six categories: material management, cutting, manufacturing, assembly, final inspection and shipping. Small orders are cut in Nijkerk, while large orders go to the company's foreign production facility. Every hat — on average containing 26 components made to precise measurements — is manually inspected for size, appearance and durability before shipping. The firm remains a family business trading under the historic name N.V. Uniformpettenfabriek v/h Fa. A. Hassing.
