Overview
NuNet is a peer-to-peer protocol for decentralized compute orchestration. According to its official website, it "discovers, matches, and delivers compute across any infrastructure — GPUs, servers, edge devices, data centers — so workloads find the right resources automatically." The project is open-source under the Apache 2.0 license and settles on Cardano and Ethereum. Its network went live on March 2, 2026. NuNet originated in 2018, incubated inside SingularityNET by Dr. Kabir Veitas, Dr. Weaver D.R. Weinbaum, and Dr. Ben Goertzel, with the original NuNet whitepaper published that year. In 2021 the project incorporated as a company in August, published Whitepaper 2.0 in October, and ran the NTX token sale in November. Through 2024–25 it moved from prototype to production, running Cardano SPO pilots on testnet, delivering Catalyst projects (Decentralized GPU ML Cloud, Decentralized SPO), and forming first partnerships with Auki Labs and Serverista. In October 2025 the NuNet Foundation — operating in continuous form since 2021 — was formalized to support long-term governance and stewardship of the open-source protocol, while NuNet Solutions formalized its specialization as the commercial arm. In February 2026 the HOMEPUTE369 proof of concept was delivered, with AI agents managing energy consumption across smart housing and data processed locally on edge devices. The network launched in March 2026, transitioning from R&D to adoption. NuNet positions itself against traditional cloud computing, arguing that the cloud "wasn't built for what comes next" as AI moves into the physical world — robots, buildings, vehicles, factories, and cities. It highlights three dimensions: money (cloud costs compound with scale and lock-in), time (physical-world systems need sub-second decisions that distant data centers cannot provide), and a third dimension described on its site. The protocol is designed to coordinate compute that is local, fast, and distributed across devices and locations. The project operates as two legal entities with separate mandates: the NuNet Foundation supports long-term governance of the open-source protocol, and NuNet Solutions builds commercial products. NuNet is a member of the Linux Foundation (Silver Member), Cloud Native Computing Foundation, LF Edge, and the Intercognitive Foundation. Its ecosystem and trust partners include SingularityNET, ASI Alliance, Linux Foundation, Cloud Native Computing Foundation, LF Edge, Intercognitive Foundation, Cardano Foundation, and Auki Labs. Real workloads are running on the network in energy, robotics, and data-center infrastructure, with a focus on broadening access, deepening partnerships, and expanding the kinds of compute the protocol can orchestrate.
History
NuNet began in 2018 as an incubation project inside SingularityNET, founded by Dr. Kabir Veitas, Dr. Weaver D.R. Weinbaum, and Dr. Ben Goertzel. The original NuNet whitepaper was published that year, laying out the vision of a peer-to-peer protocol for decentralized compute orchestration. In 2021 the project took corporate form. NuNet incorporated as a company in August 2021, published Whitepaper 2.0 in October 2021, and ran the NTX token sale in November 2021. The NuNet Foundation began operating in continuous form from 2021 to support long-term governance and stewardship of the open-source protocol. Between 2024 and 2025, NuNet moved from prototype to production. Cardano SPO pilots ran on testnet, and Catalyst projects were delivered, including the Decentralized GPU ML Cloud and Decentralized SPO. The project formed its first partnerships with Auki Labs and Serverista during this period. In October 2025, NuNet formalized its structure: the NuNet Foundation, operating continuously since 2021, was confirmed as the governance steward of the open-source protocol, while NuNet Solutions formalized its specialization as the commercial arm. Day-to-day development and operations currently sit with the NuNet team via Solutions. In February 2026, NuNet delivered the HOMEPUTE369 proof of concept — its first validated proof of concept against the production protocol. The PoC involved AI agents managing energy consumption across smart housing, with data processed locally on edge devices instead of being sent to the cloud. On March 2, 2026, the NuNet Network Live launched, marking the protocol's transition from R&D to adoption. Onboarding began for devices and workloads. As of the launch, real workloads were running on the network in energy, robotics, and data-center infrastructure, with the focus shifting to broadening access, deepening partnerships, and expanding the kinds of compute the protocol can orchestrate.
