Overview
NTB Bilder og video is a Scandinavian picture agency and the image and video archive of the Norwegian News Agency (Norsk Telegrambyrå, NTB). It is described as the largest picture agency in the Nordic region, with an archive of more than 300 million images, videos and news graphics. The image base contains material dating back to the 20th century as well as news from the most recent hours. In addition to its own production, the agency sells images on behalf of a number of picture agencies around the world and holds sales rights to the image archives of the Norwegian newspapers VG and Aftenposten. It also produces its own video news and maintains a film archive containing more than 1 million hours of film. The agency traces its origins to a 1999 merger between Scanfoto and the photo division of NTB Pluss, which created the business under the name Scanpix. By 2010 Scanpix had around fifty employees in addition to a large network of freelancers and international cooperation partners. The Scanpix organisation ceased in 2011 when the business merged with NTB, and the picture agency was renamed NTB scanpix. In September 2020 Norsk Telegrambyrå announced that the Scanpix brand would be discontinued and the picture agency renamed NTB Bilder og video, thereby gathering all of NTB's services under a single name. NTB Bilder og video operates as part of NTB, an independent Norwegian news agency that collaborates with news agencies and media worldwide and supplies editorial content in text, images, video and graphics to Norwegian media and the business sector. Its service portfolio includes a picture portal, royal-household coverage, news images and news video, the Mediebank (NTB Lens) media bank, sports photography, historical images and videos, illustration images and videos, picture series, photo and video assignments, image rights and contract terms, and picture editing. The agency is headquartered at Skippergata 24 (Pressens hus) in Oslo, with a postal address at Boks 6817 St. Olavs plass, N-0130 Oslo.
History
NTB Bilder og video was formed through a merger between Scanfoto and the photo division of NTB Pluss in 1999, initially under the name Scanpix. The new business combined photographic expertise and archive resources into a single Scandinavian picture agency. By 2010 Scanpix had grown to a total of fifty employees, supported by a large network of freelancers and international cooperation partners. The organisation operated as a distinct entity within the Norwegian media landscape, supplying images to newspapers, broadcasters and other customers. The Scanpix organisation ceased to exist in 2011 when the business merged with NTB, and the picture agency was renamed NTB scanpix. This merger integrated the picture agency more closely into the Norwegian News Agency's operations. In September 2020 Norsk Telegrambyrå announced that the Scanpix brand would be discontinued and the picture agency renamed NTB Bilder og video. This change gathered all of NTB's services under a single name, aligning the picture and video business with the parent agency's brand identity. Today NTB Bilder og video is described as the Nordic region's largest picture agency, with an archive of more than 300 million images, videos and news graphics. The image base spans material from the 20th century to news from the most recent hours. The agency sells images on behalf of several picture agencies worldwide and holds sales rights to the image archives of VG and Aftenposten. It also produces its own video news and maintains a film archive of more than 1 million hours of film. Its services include a picture portal, royal-household coverage, news images and video, the Mediebank (NTB Lens) media bank, sports photography, historical images and videos, illustration images and videos, picture series, photo and video assignments, image rights and contract terms, and picture editing. The agency is headquartered at Skippergata 24 (Pressens hus) in Oslo.
