Overview

NRV-Rechtsschutz, formally Neue Rechtsschutz-Versicherungsgesellschaft AG (NRV), is a German insurance company that specialises in legal expenses insurance (Rechtsschutzversicherung). It was founded in 1955 by the then Mannheimer Versicherungs AG as a separate legal entity, because German insurance supervision law at the time prohibited a general indemnity insurer from writing legal expenses insurance within the same company. The company is headquartered in Mannheim and operates primarily in the German market, with distribution also extending to Austria through Garanta Österreich Versicherungs-AG. NRV offers legal protection insurance products covering areas such as traffic law, employment law, tenancy law, and general legal disputes. Its services include telephone legal advice through JURCALL, a debt collection service branded JURCASH aimed at self-employed individuals and landlords, and a digital sales platform called NRV-Salespoint that allows brokers to calculate and bind policies around the clock. The company distributes its products through several partner insurers, including Nürnberger Allgemeine Versicherungs-AG, VHV Vereinigte Hannoversche Versicherung a. G., Mannheimer Versicherung AG, and Garanta Österreich Versicherungs-AG. As of 31 December 2020, the shareholders of NRV AG were Nürnberger Allgemeine Versicherungs-AG with 51%, VHV Holding AG with 34.02%, and Continentale Holding AG with 14.98%. Until July 2017, Stuttgarter Lebensversicherung a. G. held a stake, which was sold to VHV Holding and Nürnberger Allgemeine. The company is one of the 15 largest legal expenses insurers in Germany by gross premiums written. In 2024, NRV recorded gross premiums written of €95 million, claims payments of €52.7 million, and capital investments of €183.9 million. Its market share in the German legal expenses insurance market was 2.6% as of 31 December 2016.

History

The Neue Rechtsschutz-Versicherungsgesellschaft (NRV) was founded in 1955 by the then Mannheimer Versicherungs AG as an independent company. The creation of a separate legal entity was necessitated by the German Insurance Supervision Act (Versicherungsaufsichtsgesetz), which at the time prohibited a general indemnity insurer from operating a legal expenses insurance business within the same company. This regulatory separation allowed the Mannheimer group to enter the legal expenses market while complying with the law. Over the following decades, NRV established itself as a specialist in legal expenses insurance in Germany. By the 2010s, it ranked among the 15 largest legal expenses insurers in the German market by gross premiums written. In 2009, the company recorded gross premiums of €67,059,125 and claims payments of €43,386,591, with capital investments of approximately €117.9 million. By 2011, gross premiums written had risen to €73.4 million, claims payments were €40.6 million, and capital investments stood at €117.4 million. Ownership of NRV evolved over time. Until July 2017, Stuttgarter Lebensversicherung a. G. held a stake in the company. In July 2017, its shares were sold to VHV Holding and Nürnberger Allgemeine. As of 31 December 2020, the shareholders were Nürnberger Allgemeine Versicherungs-AG (51%), VHV Holding AG (34.02%), and Continentale Holding AG (14.98%). In 2016, NRV held a 2.6% share of the German legal expenses insurance market. In 2017, the company reported gross premiums written of €96.8 million, claims payments of €55.3 million, and capital investments of €152.9 million. By 2024, gross premiums written were €95 million, claims payments were €52.7 million, and capital investments had grown to €183.9 million. The company continues to operate as a specialist legal expenses insurer, distributing its products through partner insurers such as Nürnberger Allgemeine, VHV, Mannheimer Versicherung, and Garanta Österreich.
