Overview

NRN is a regional free-to-air television station originating in Coffs Harbour, New South Wales. It serves the Northern New South Wales television market and the Gold Coast in Queensland, carrying programming supplied by Network 10 and advertising tailored to its licensed service areas. Although the NRN identity has existed through several ownership and branding arrangements, the station is principally a transmission and advertising outlet rather than a large standalone television network in the contemporary market. The station's origins lie in two regional services. NRN-11 Coffs Harbour commenced broadcasting on 23 January 1965, while RTN-8 Lismore began on 12 May 1962. NRN-11 had previously been associated with ECN-8 Taree, and the Coffs Harbour and Lismore operations later combined to form Northern Rivers Television, generally known on air in its early period as 11–8 Television. The merged service covered the Mid North Coast and Northern Rivers regions. During part of the 1970s it used the Great Eastland Television identity while sharing programming and advertising arrangements with stations in Tamworth and southern Queensland, before returning to the Northern Rivers Television name. NRN developed a notable local-production operation during the 1970s and 1980s. Programming included regional news, women's variety, children's shows, birthday segments, exercise programming, holiday specials and live sports coverage. Production originated mainly from Coffs Harbour, with facilities at Lismore and the Gold Coast also contributing. In 1983, following local lobbying, the service was extended to the Gold Coast. The Gold Coast operation included studios and offices at Ashmore, although news production remained centred on the northern New South Wales facilities. Ownership changed repeatedly as Australian regional television consolidated. In December 1987, NRN and RTN were sold by Northern Star Holdings to Darling Downs Television. Following regional aggregation in northern New South Wales on 31 December 1991, Northern Rivers Television became affiliated with Network 10. Telecasters Australia acquired the station in 1993, and in 1994 it was renamed Ten Northern NSW and adopted Network 10-aligned presentation. Local full-length news production was discontinued in May 1995 after weak ratings, although shorter local updates returned under later owners. Southern Cross Broadcasting acquired Ten Northern NSW and Telecasters in 2001. The station was subsequently branded Southern Cross Ten and carried additional digital services, including One HD and Eleven. From 2016, its distinctive Southern Cross Ten presentation was progressively replaced with mainstream Ten branding. A proposed sale to WIN Television was discussed in 2017 and ultimately completed for $55 million, with WIN assuming operational control later that year. WIN subsequently operated the service while maintaining its Network 10 programming relationship. Network 10 announced an agreement to acquire NRN from WIN in February 2025, with completion reported on 1 May 2025. Playout and transmission continued to be provided through WIN's MediaHub facility in Ingleburn after the transaction. The station now carries Network 10's principal service and selected multichannels, together with regional advertising and short local news updates. Its Gold Coast distribution uses the Brisbane feed, while its Northern New South Wales service uses the Sydney feed. The station remains active, but its local editorial and production role is substantially smaller than during the era of Northern Rivers Television's locally produced programming.

History

NRN's history is rooted in the development of commercial television in regional New South Wales. RTN-8 Lismore launched in 1962, followed by NRN-11 Coffs Harbour in 1965. The Coffs Harbour operation had earlier been connected with ECN-8 Taree, but the services later separated. Around 1971, NRN-11 and RTN-8 combined as Northern Rivers Television, creating a service for the Mid North Coast and Northern Rivers. The early merged presentation was commonly called 11–8 Television. During the mid-1970s, the operation also used Great Eastland Television while sharing programs and advertising with NEN-9 Tamworth and Queensland stations, but later returned to the NRTV identity. The station's strongest period of local production came before the consolidation of regional television. NRTV produced regional news and a variety of entertainment and community programs, including Round About, Get Set, Birthdays, Razzamataz, Summerthon and Jazzacize. It also broadcast live or specially produced coverage of events such as the Grafton Cup Racing Carnival and the Grafton to Inverell Cycling Classic. Coffs Harbour was the principal production centre, supported by facilities in Lismore and on the Gold Coast. A Gold Coast relay began in 1983 after a campaign by local residents. The Ashmore studios and offices did not operate as a full newsroom; significant stories were generally handled through the northern New South Wales operation. In December 1987, Northern Star Holdings sold NRN and RTN to Darling Downs Television. Regional aggregation reached northern New South Wales at the end of 1991, at which point NRTV became a Network 10 affiliate. A proposed merger with Queensland's Vision TV in 1990 did not proceed. Telecasters Australia acquired the station in 1993, and the following year the service adopted the Ten Northern NSW name and Network 10's on-air presentation. Its licence-wide regional news bulletin was discontinued in May 1995 after poor ratings, marking a significant reduction in local production. Southern Cross Broadcasting bought Telecasters and Ten Northern NSW in 2001. In 2002 the station was rebranded Southern Cross Ten, and it later adopted the network's star-based identity. Digital expansion brought One HD to NRN in 2009 and Eleven in 2011. In 2016, Southern Cross phased out the station-specific Southern Cross Ten presentation in favour of Ten branding. The station also briefly carried Yesshop, a shopping datacast service that disappeared after its operator stopped trading. WIN Television purchased NRN for $55 million in 2017. Although the sale was agreed earlier in the year, operational control and playout transferred on 1 September, using WIN's MediaHub facility in Ingleburn. WIN branding was applied to the station and its multi-channels, but the underlying programming relationship with Network 10 continued. WIN introduced or carried services such as Sky News on WIN, later known as News24 Regional, and renamed the former One and Eleven services WIN Boss, WIN Bold and WIN Peach at different stages. In 2021, WIN renewed its program-supply agreement with Paramount, the owner of Network 10. Outside local news, the Northern New South Wales service moved back toward Network 10 presentation as WIN's arrangements changed in other regional markets. Network 10 announced its purchase of NRN in February 2025 and completed the transaction on 1 May. The station continued using WIN's MediaHub for playout and transmission after the sale. In 2025, WIN-branded local updates were replaced by 10 News local update branding, though WIN remained responsible for producing the short bulletins on behalf of 10. NRN's current role is therefore primarily the regional distribution of Network 10 programming, local advertising and brief local information updates.
