Overview
Nova is a shopping and leisure centre in Günthersdorf, a district of Leuna in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, located between Leipzig and Halle (Saale) near the A9 motorway. With a sales area of 76,000 m², around 160 specialist shops and more than 7,000 free parking spaces, it is one of the largest shopping centres in the Leipzig-Halle region and describes itself as the largest shopping centre in central Germany. The centre is managed by ECE of Hamburg, the European market leader in shopping centre management, and is owned by the US firms Ares Management and Baupost Group. The centre originated as the Saale-Park. Conversion work began in 2003, and after a ten-month construction period the first of four construction phases was completed in 2004, when the Saale-Park was renamed Nova Eventis. The third phase opened on 15 March 2006, and the work was completed in autumn of the same year. Up to 600 people were employed in building the large-scale project, in which around 170 million euros were invested. Together with other large projects (two furniture stores, a car dealership and a wholesale market that has since closed), 500 hectares of previously agricultural land were completely redeveloped over 15 years. The client and investor was Deka Immobilien Investment GmbH; the owner was Prejan Enterprises Ltd. of England. Around 1,500 jobs were created with Nova Eventis, making it one of the largest development projects in the Leipzig-Halle region. In May 2017 the centre was sold for 200 million euros to the US companies Ares Management and Baupost Group. From mid-2019 a further conversion took place, giving the centre a new look as well as a new name and logo: nova|eventis became Nova. The centre consists of two parallel shopping streets, shop windows along a total of 3,000 metres and three elliptical event halls. Nova has a catchment area of 2.7 million people. It also contains a food court with more than 500 seats. Directly in front of the centre are a water feature that is used as an ice rink in winter, a skate park, an indoor climbing forest and a cinema. "Das verrückte Haus" (The Crazy House) on the car park in front of the shopping centre can be visited daily. Two furniture stores are neighbours: Höffner has one of its 19 German locations in Günthersdorf, and IKEA one of its 51. Nova offers a broad range of services, including a kid-car rental, an adventure playground, wheelchair rental, lifts, barrier-free toilets, lockers, charging stations, massage chairs, a family room, a defibrillator, cash machines from several banks, a travel bank, WLAN and a centre app. The centre is also present on social media including Meta, Instagram and TikTok. Peter Lehnhardt is the centre manager. The centre regularly hosts events and promotions, such as a 20th-anniversary celebration week, a sports arena, and competitions to win prizes such as an iPhone 17 or an RB Leipzig jersey.
