Overview

Notpla Limited is a British packaging company. Its official site describes Notpla as a family of regenerative packaging materials made from seaweed and plants, with a core team of interdisciplinary experts in material science, engineering, biology, bio-design and business services. The company's product range includes food containers, pipettes for oils, seaweed-paper, dissolving pods and films. Its Ooho edible liquid packaging was developed as an edible water bubble prototype by co-founders Rodrigo Garcia Gonzalez and Pierre Paslier at London's Imperial College in 2013.

History

Notpla Co-Founders Rodrigo Garcia Gonzalez and Pierre Paslier developed an edible water bubble prototype at London's Imperial College in 2013, initially making each one by hand in their student kitchen. The name Ooho came from the reaction of people experiencing these edible liquid balls. In 2017 the company raised £850,000 over 3 days in a crowd fund. In 2018 the first Ooho machine was created. In 2019 Notpla partnered with Lucozade to replace single-use plastic cups and bottles with almost 40,000 water bottles at the London Marathon. In 2020 it secured £10 million Series A funding to accelerate the scale-up of its portfolio. In 2022 it won the Earthshot Prize to 'Build a Waste-Free World' and launched Notpla Takeaway boxes with partner JustEat, replacing plastic in Wembley stadium for the UEFA Women's Euro Final. In 2023 it launched Notpla Paper with partner G.F. Smith. As part of a €4 million, three year Horizon Europe research project, Notpla is working to reinvent the coffee cup without plastic, building on early pilots including its Gen 1 espresso cup.
