Overview

Norwegian Spirit is a Leo-class cruise ship operated by Norwegian Cruise Line. The vessel was constructed by Meyer Werft in Papenburg, Germany, and entered service in 1998 as SuperStar Leo for Star Cruises. It was the first ship built to the Leo-class design, a configuration later associated with the sister ship SuperStar Virgo, now known as Star Navigator. The ship was delivered on 25 September 1998, ahead of its contractual schedule, and initially operated from Singapore on short cruises to Malaysia and Thailand. In September 1999 it moved to Hong Kong, where it served itineraries covering southern China, Hainan, Vietnam and the South China Sea. The vessel's early operating history reflected changing conditions in the Asian cruise market. In 2003, the SARS outbreak prompted its temporary transfer to Australia. It later returned to Hong Kong. In 2004, the ship was transferred from Star Cruises to Norwegian Cruise Line after problems affecting the planned introduction of Pride of America created an urgent need for replacement capacity. Following a short refit, SuperStar Leo entered the Norwegian fleet under the name Norwegian Spirit and began operating cruises that had originally been assigned to another NCL vessel. Norwegian Spirit is a large conventional cruise ship powered by four MAN B&W medium-speed diesel engines. Its propulsion system uses ABB electric motors driving twin propellers. The ship's onboard offering has included restaurants, bars and lounges, entertainment spaces, public areas, cabins and shore-excursion services. Its commercial identity is therefore tied to the Norwegian Cruise Line fleet rather than to an independent consumer brand: Norwegian Spirit is the vessel name and guest-facing product designation for a specific cruise ship. A major refurbishment was completed in Marseille, France, in January 2020. The 43-day drydock added six restaurants and seven bars and lounges, modernized staterooms, upgraded public spaces and introduced new hull artwork. The project was reported to have cost more than $100 million. Norwegian Cruise Line originally intended to deploy the refurbished ship in Asia during 2020, but that plan was cancelled amid the emerging COVID-19 crisis. A proposed Greek Isles program was also cancelled after cruise operations were broadly suspended during the pandemic. Norwegian Spirit resumed service in May 2022 with South Pacific and Hawaii itineraries. In summer 2024 it operated under a charter arrangement departing from Taiwan, completing that contract in autumn. The ship has also experienced several operational incidents. It struck or contacted port infrastructure in Juneau and New York on separate occasions, and in May 2008 contacted Pier 90 in New York at the end of a Caribbean voyage, damaging both the ship's bow and support structures at a parking facility. Heavy seas near Tortola in 2006 caused a list, broken windows and flooding in passenger cabins. Other reported events involved passenger deaths, missing passengers, an overboard recovery and a passenger disappearance. In 2019, passengers protested during a European voyage after itinerary changes and onboard plumbing problems. In March 2020, passengers were prevented from disembarking in Port Victoria, Seychelles, amid concerns about coronavirus. The vessel has also appeared in popular media, including a Japanese television drama filmed during its SuperStar Leo period and a brief scene in the film 21 Jump Street.

History

Norwegian Spirit began its operational life as SuperStar Leo, the first vessel of Star Cruises' Leo class. Meyer Werft built the ship at its Papenburg shipyard in Germany. Following successful sea trials in early September 1998, the vessel was delivered on 25 September, approximately one week earlier than required by its contract. It was initially based in Singapore and operated short regional voyages, generally lasting between two and five nights, to Malaysia and Thailand. The arrival of SuperStar Virgo in Singapore in 1999 led to a change in deployment. On 10 September 1999, SuperStar Leo was based in Hong Kong and began offering short cruises to destinations including mainland China, Hainan, Vietnam and the South China Sea. In 2003, the SARS outbreak affected the Asian cruise market and the vessel was temporarily transferred to Australia. It subsequently returned to Hong Kong. A major change occurred in 2004. Norwegian Cruise Line was preparing to introduce Pride of America, but that ship was damaged and partially sank during a storm at the Lloyd Werft shipyard shortly before completion. NCL consequently had to reorganize its fleet to cover already booked voyages. Norwegian Sky was rapidly placed into service under the temporary name Pride of Aloha, while SuperStar Leo was transferred from Star Cruises to NCL. The ship's previously planned Star Cruises voyages were cancelled, requiring affected passengers to be refunded or rebooked. After approximately two weeks of refitting, the vessel entered NCL service as Norwegian Spirit and assumed the planned replacement deployment. During its NCL career, the ship served a variety of regional markets and itineraries. Its history includes cruises in Asia, Australia, North America, Europe, the Caribbean, the South Pacific and Hawaii. Its propulsion plant consists of four MAN B&W 14V48 medium-speed diesel engines, each rated at 14,700 kilowatts, with ABB electric propulsion motors connected to twin propellers. The ship underwent a substantial renovation in Marseille in January 2020. The 43-day drydock introduced six restaurants, seven bars and lounges, refreshed public spaces, modernized staterooms and new hull artwork. The reported cost exceeded $100 million. The refurbishment was completed just as the global cruise industry was being disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. A planned Asian program for 2020 was cancelled because of coronavirus concerns, and a later plan for Greek Isles cruises was also cancelled when NCL suspended sailings. Norwegian Spirit eventually resumed operations in May 2022 with South Pacific and Hawaii cruises. In 2024, it operated a Taiwan-based charter program during the summer before completing that contract in autumn. The vessel's documented incident history includes contact with a pier in Juneau in 2005 and another collision with a pier in New York Harbor in 2007. In January 2006, heavy seas and rogue waves near Tortola caused the ship to list, break windows and flood 11 passenger cabins. In March 2008, a passenger died following a zip-line accident on an NCL-sponsored excursion in Roatán, Honduras. In May 2008, the vessel contacted Pier 90 in New York City, damaging its bow and parking-garage support columns. A passenger was killed during a robbery in Santo Tomás de Castilla, Guatemala, in November 2009. In June 2011, a passenger went overboard in the Mississippi River but was recovered alive after a rescue-boat response. In April 2018, another passenger reportedly went overboard near Cabo de Palos, Spain; a coastguard search did not locate him. Norwegian Spirit has had a modest media presence beyond the cruise industry. A Japanese television drama, Netsuretsu teki chuka hanten, used the ship during its SuperStar Leo period in 2003. The renamed vessel was also briefly visible while docked in New Orleans in the 2012 film 21 Jump Street.
