Overview
The Norwegian Centre for Research Data, commonly known as NSD, was a Norwegian institution supporting the collection, management, preservation, discovery, and controlled use of data for research. Its activities were particularly associated with the social sciences, although its infrastructure and services formed part of the wider national research-data environment. The organization was based in Bergen and served Norway’s academic and research community. NSD began in 1971 as part of the Research Council of Norway. Its original institutional identity was closely connected with the provision of social-science data services, and it was known for many years as Norwegian Social Science Data Services. The name changed to Norwegian Centre for Research Data on 1 March 2016, reflecting a broader remit than the earlier social-science-focused designation. The organization’s work covered research-data archiving, data management, access services, and support for researchers and institutions dealing with data-intensive research. It also operated important information infrastructures, including the Norwegian Scientific Index and ERIH PLUS, a European database covering research publications in the humanities and social sciences. These services supported research evaluation, discovery, documentation, and the reuse of scholarly information. In 2003, NSD was reorganized as a limited company while remaining owned by Norway’s Ministry of Education and Research. By 2015, it was described as one of the world’s largest archives for research data and employed approximately 90 people in Bergen. Its institutional role therefore combined operational data services with national research infrastructure responsibilities. NSD ceased to exist as a separate organization following a structural merger in 2022. It was combined with Uninett and Unit into Sikt, the Norwegian Agency for Shared Services in Education and Research. Some of NSD’s functions continued within Sikt, including provision of the Norwegian Scientific Index. ERIH PLUS is hosted by the Norwegian Directorate for Higher Education and Skills. The NSD name is consequently historical, although its services and data infrastructures remain relevant through successor organizations.
History
The Norwegian Centre for Research Data was established in 1971 as part of the Research Council of Norway. Its creation reflected the growing need for organized systems through which researchers could store, document, preserve, and access empirical material, especially in the social sciences. For much of its early history, the organization was known as Norwegian Social Science Data Services, a name that emphasized its original disciplinary focus. NSD developed into a national research-data institution serving Norway’s academic community. Its responsibilities included the preservation and management of research datasets, support for data access, and services that helped researchers work with documented and reusable information. Through these activities, it occupied an intermediary position between researchers, higher-education institutions, public authorities, and research infrastructure networks. A major institutional change occurred in 2003, when NSD was reorganized as a limited company. Ownership remained with Norway’s Ministry of Education and Research, preserving its public-sector mission while giving the organization a distinct corporate structure. By 2015, NSD was reported to employ about 90 people in Bergen and to rank among the world’s largest archives for research data. The organization also operated scholarly information systems beyond its core archival activities. The Norwegian Scientific Index provided information used in the Norwegian research-publication environment. NSD also operated ERIH PLUS, a European database for research publications in the humanities and social sciences. These systems broadened NSD’s role from data preservation into research information, indexing, discovery, and evaluation infrastructure. On 1 March 2016, the institution adopted the name Norwegian Centre for Research Data. The change signaled a wider organizational remit and reduced the emphasis on the earlier social-science-only identity. The NSD abbreviation continued to be used, and the organization remained associated with national research-data services in Norway. NSD’s independent institutional existence ended in 2022. It was merged with Uninett and Unit into Sikt, the Norwegian Agency for Shared Services in Education and Research. Following the merger, the Norwegian Scientific Index continued to be provided by Sikt, while ERIH PLUS was hosted by the Norwegian Directorate for Higher Education and Skills. The merger therefore represented institutional consolidation rather than the disappearance of all NSD-developed services. The NSD brand is now historical, with parts of its infrastructure and public-service responsibilities carried forward by successor agencies.
