Overview

The Northern Counties Archery Society (NCAS) is a regional archery organisation in Northern England, established in 1879. It serves as a governing body for archery across several northern counties and the Isle of Man, affiliated with Archery GB (formerly GNAS). The society organises regional and national flight championships, clout shoots, and target tournaments, and administers award schemes such as the Tassel Award Scheme for clout archery. Its officers include a president, chairman, secretary, treasurer, and representatives for various archery disciplines. The society is based in Northern England and operates primarily within the United Kingdom.

History

The Northern Counties Archery Society was founded in 1879 following a letter to 'The Field' by Mr. J. Foster Jnr., who proposed a grand archery meeting for the northern counties. A meeting was held on October 30th at Leeds Archers' Hall, where a resolution was passed to establish 'The Grand Northern Archery Meeting' for six northern counties and the counties of Chester, Derby, Nottingham, and Lincoln. The first meeting took place the following year on The Gentlemen's Cricket Ground at York. Over time, the society evolved into its current form, now covering five counties and the Isle of Man. In 1996, the Tassel Award Scheme for clout archery was introduced, backed by NCAS. The society continues to organise regional and national flight championships, with Tony Bakes serving as Flight Officer since 1998.
