Overview
North Paravur Municipality is a municipal local self-government body in the Paravur taluk of Ernakulam district in Kerala, India. It administers the town known as North Paravur, one of the ancient towns of Kerala. The municipality is a civic administrative entity rather than a commercial brand, and its official website is northparavurmunicipality.in. The town is distinct from the similarly named town in Kollam district, which is known as South Paravur. The name Paravur is thought to derive from either 'Paraiyur' (the settlement of the Paraiyar people) or 'Paravur' (the settlement of the Parava community), with historical records indicating the former Tamil name Paraiyur. The region was historically significant, with Thiruvanchikulam nearby serving as the capital of the Second Chera Empire. In the fifteenth century, Paravur had flourishing trade relations with the Portuguese and the Dutch. A mud fort that stood as a monument to the rule of the Paravur king was destroyed during the military campaign of Tipu Sultan. The municipality borders Chittattukara and Chendamangalam grama panchayats to the north, Chittattukara and Kottuvally grama panchayats to the east, Kottuvally and Ezhikkara grama panchayats to the south, and Ezhikkara grama panchayat to the west. As a municipality, it provides civic services to its residents and is part of Kerala's urban local body system.
History
North Paravur is one of the ancient towns of Kerala, located in Ernakulam district. The name Paravur is believed to derive from either 'Paraiyur' (the settlement of the Paraiyar people) or 'Paravur' (the settlement of the Parava community). Historical records indicate that the earlier name of the place was Paraiyur in Tamil, and it is thought that the loss of the 'ai' sound during the transition from Tamil to Malayalam resulted in the name Parayur. Alternatively, the area was ruled by the Paravur Thampurakkans, and 'Paravur' may have evolved from 'the settlement of the Paravas'. Thiruvanchikulam, near Paravur, was the capital of the Second Chera Empire. In the fifteenth century, Paravur had active trade relations with the Portuguese and the Dutch. A mud fort that served as a monument to the rule of the Paravur king was destroyed during the military campaign of Tipu Sultan. The town is distinct from the town of the same name in Kollam district, which is known as South Paravur. The municipality's boundaries are defined by neighbouring grama panchayats: to the north, Chittattukara and Chendamangalam; to the east, Chittattukara and Kottuvally; to the south, Kottuvally and Ezhikkara; and to the west, Ezhikkara.
