Overview

Norsk jazzarkiv (NJA, the Norwegian Jazz Archive) was a Norwegian foundation established in Oslo in 1981 with the purpose of safeguarding and developing documentation and expertise concerning the history of jazz in Norway. It collected, organised and secured sound recordings, photographs, periodicals, programmes, posters and other material documenting Norwegian jazz history. The archive also disseminated knowledge through publications, CD productions, exhibitions, lectures and other outreach, and it encouraged research into jazz in Norway and jazz's place in Norwegian music history and musical life. It offered assistance to media, school pupils, students, researchers and others interested in Norwegian jazz history. Johs. Bergh was central to the establishment and served as leader from 1981 to 1990. Finn J. Kramer-Johansen later became leader of the archive. NJA carried out its own research projects and published the series "Publikasjoner fra Norsk jazzarkiv", produced Norwegian jazz biographies, collaborated with the National Library of Norway on the website Jazzbasen.no, and contributed to CD productions, exhibitions and lectures. From 1 January 2014, the activities of Norsk jazzarkiv were continued within the National Library of Norway (Nasjonalbiblioteket), which took over responsibility for carrying forward the archive's tasks. The foundation itself was later wound up ("Avvikling av stiftelsen Norsk jazzarkiv"), with operations continued in the National Library. The archive's legacy includes major discographical and historical publications on Norwegian jazz, such as Bjørn Stendahl and Johs. Bergh's works on jazz in Norway 1920–1940, 1940–1950 and 1950–1960, and Johs. Bergh's Norwegian jazz discography 1905–1998, later continued online via Jazzbasen.no.

History

Norsk jazzarkiv (NJA) was established in Oslo in 1981 as a Norwegian foundation. Its purpose was to safeguard and develop documentation and expertise concerning the history of jazz in Norway. The archive collected, organised and secured sound recordings, photographs, periodicals, programmes, posters and other material that could document Norwegian jazz history. Johs. Bergh was central to its establishment and served as leader from 1981 to 1990. Later, Finn J. Kramer-Johansen became leader of the archive. NJA carried out its own research projects and published the series "Publikasjoner fra Norsk jazzarkiv". It produced Norwegian jazz biographies, collaborated with the National Library of Norway on the website Jazzbasen.no, and contributed to CD productions, exhibitions, lectures and other dissemination. The archive sought to stimulate research on jazz in Norway and on jazz's place in Norwegian music history and musical life, and offered assistance to media, school pupils, students, researchers and others interested in Norwegian jazz history. Among its notable publications were Bjørn Stendahl's "Jazz, hot & swing: Jazz i Norge 1920–1940" (1987, with a discography by Johs. Bergh); Steinar Kristiansen and Bjørn Stendahl's "Intervju med eldre norske jazzmusikere" (1987); the proceedings of the third Nordic conference on jazz research (1987); Bjørn Stendahl and Johs. Bergh's "Sigarett Stomp: Jazz i Norge 1940–1950" (1991); Johs. Bergh and Jan Evensmo's "Jazz tenor saxophone in Norway 1917–1959" (1996); Bjørn Stendahl and Johs. Bergh's "Cool, kløver og dixie: Jazz i Norge 1950–1960" (1997); Johs. Bergh's "Norwegian jazz discography 1905-1998" (1999, also published on the Internet in 1999); Jan Evensmo's "History of jazz tenor saxophone, Black artists, 1917–1954", volumes 1–5 (1996–2002); "Nordisk jazzforskning. Rapport fra den sjette konferansen i Oslo, 9.–10. august 2002" (2003); the five-record set "Jazz in Norway" with 110 melodies from the period 1920–1980 (Herman Records); and Jan Evensmo's "History of Jazz Tenor Saxophone, Black Artists, 1955–59" (2008). From 1 January 2014, the activities of Norsk jazzarkiv were continued within the National Library of Norway (Nasjonalbiblioteket), which took over responsibility for carrying forward the archive's tasks. The foundation was later wound up, with operations continued in the National Library. The archive's online legacy includes Jazzbasen.no, which continues the Norwegian Jazz Discography 1905–1998 (by Johs. Bergh; 4000 performers, 1400 albums, 12000 melodies).
