Overview

Normet is a Finland-headquartered technology company focused on the specialist equipment, materials, digital systems, and services used in underground mining, tunnelling, and civil construction. Its offering combines mobile machinery with construction chemicals, rock-reinforcement products, process expertise, and aftermarket support. Rather than operating primarily as a general industrial-equipment supplier, Normet positions itself around complete customer processes: charging and blasting, drilling, concrete spraying, ground support, rock reinforcement, material handling, equipment maintenance, and the monitoring and optimization of underground operations. The company originated in 1962 as Peltosalmi Machine Workshop, founded by brothers Jaakko and Jussi Sarvela on their farm in Finland. The workshop initially built tractor-compatible earthmoving equipment, then expanded into forestry machinery. Its early products included tractor loaders, a skidding winch, and a three-axle forestry tractor. Export activity began during this formative period, and the founders received a Finnish national entrepreneur award in 1969. In 1972, Orion Corporation acquired the workshop and renamed it Normet Oy. Under Orion, the company moved more decisively into mining machinery and began exporting equipment to Sweden. Normet remained part of Orion until 1999, when it was sold to Fenno Management, an investment vehicle associated with Sitra. In 2005, the entire share capital was transferred to Normet Group. The ownership structure at that point included Cantell Oy, investor Aaro Cantell, and members of Normet management. The 2000s and early 2010s marked a period of international expansion and product broadening. Normet established offices and operating capabilities in multiple countries, supplied large fleets of mining machines, and expanded manufacturing and service operations beyond Finland. It also entered construction chemicals through its investment in TAM International and later increased its ownership until TAM Group became fully owned. By 2012, the company’s portfolio covered equipment and applications for charging and blasting, drilling, ground support, concrete spraying, and construction chemicals. Acquisitions such as Essverk Berg in Sweden and the concrete-spraying business acquired from Atlas Copco strengthened its equipment and service position. Normet has increasingly emphasized automation, connectivity, and lower-emission equipment. In 2019 it began developing battery-powered Normet SmartDrive vehicles, with an electric concrete-spraying machine among the first products brought to market. The company has also expanded its industrial internet capabilities through the acquisition of Remion, and it has taken minority positions in companies working on electric hammering, electric drives, and battery storage for off-highway equipment. Recent growth has been supported by acquisitions in ground support, sprayed-concrete application, boom systems, hydraulic attachments, and digital industrial services. In 2022, Normet acquired Australian ground-support manufacturer Garock and Aliva Equipment, a producer of sprayed-concrete application equipment and accessories. The same year it opened a technology and production hub in Jaipur, India, combining equipment manufacturing, service rebuilding, research and development, remote monitoring, and technical training. In 2023, it acquired Finnish companies Rambooms, Marakon, and Remion, while becoming a minority shareholder in Lekatech and Motics. Normet is a private international industrial brand. Reference material describes a workforce of more than 1,800 professionals, operations in more than 50 locations, and a presence in approximately 30 countries. Its competitive proposition is based on combining machines, consumables, process technology, service, and digital support for demanding underground environments. The company’s current direction centers on lifecycle support, electrification, intelligent equipment, rock reinforcement, construction chemicals, and integrated solutions for safer and more productive underground work. History

Normet traces its origins to Peltosalmi Machine Workshop, established in 1962 by Finnish brothers Jaakko and Jussi Sarvela. The workshop operated from a farm after the brothers moved away from livestock farming and began producing earthmoving equipment designed for tractors. It grew rapidly during its first years, reaching more than fifty employees within three years and shifting much of its production toward forestry machinery. Early products included a tractor loader, a skidding winch, and Finland's first three-axle forestry tractor. The company also began exporting, and the Sarvela brothers received a national entrepreneur award in 1969. In 1972, Orion Corporation purchased the workshop, which employed roughly 180 people, and changed its name to Normet Oy. The company increasingly concentrated on mining machinery and began exporting mining equipment to Sweden. Orion's ownership lasted until early 1999, when Normet was sold to Fenno Management, an investment company connected with Sitra. In 2005, the whole company was sold to Normet Group. Cantell Oy held the largest ownership position, while Aaro Cantell and Normet management held the remaining interests described in the available reference material. Normet developed from a Finnish machinery manufacturer into an international supplier during the 2000s. In 2008 it had offices in nine countries and was considering additional operations in Mongolia. Its large equipment deliveries included a fleet supplied to Russia's Norilsk Nickel. The company's sales passed EUR 90 million in 2009, according to the cited reference material. In 2010, it manufactured heavy mining equipment in Iisalmi and Santiago de Chile and operated with several hundred employees across a growing international network. A major strategic development was Normet's entry into construction chemicals. In 2010, it acquired a 40 percent interest in TAM International, a company employing more than seventy people and specializing in construction chemicals. Normet increased its holding in TAM Group in 2012, making the business fully owned. The same period saw the establishment of subsidiaries in Mexico, Norway, and South Africa. Normet's portfolio then covered charging and blasting, drilling, ground support, heavy underground machinery, and construction chemicals. The company continued to broaden its capabilities through acquisitions. In 2011 it acquired Swedish Essverk Berg, which manufactured and serviced equipment for mining and tunnel construction. In 2016 it purchased the concrete-spraying business of Atlas Copco. These transactions reinforced Normet's position in sprayed-concrete application and equipment servicing, while its own manufacturing and assembly base remained centered in Finland and was supplemented by international operations. Electrification became a visible part of Normet's technology strategy from 2019, when the company began developing battery-powered SmartDrive vehicles. An electric concrete-spraying vehicle was among the first models to enter the market. In the same year, Ed Santamaria became president and chief executive officer, succeeding Robin Lindahl. The 2020s brought further expansion in ground support, sprayed concrete, manufacturing, and digital services. In 2022 Normet acquired Garock in Australia, a manufacturer of ground-support systems for mining, and Aliva Equipment, which produces sprayed-concrete application equipment and accessories. Normet also opened a global technology and production hub in Jaipur, India. The facility combined equipment manufacturing, a service rebuild center, research and development, remote monitoring, and technical training. In 2023 Normet acquired Finnish boom-systems manufacturer Rambooms, hydraulic-attachments supplier Marakon, and Remion, a provider of industrial internet service solutions. It also became a minority shareholder in Lekatech, which develops electric hammering technology, and Motics, a Swiss specialist in electric drives and battery storage for off-highway applications. These moves fit the company's broader effort to combine machinery with electrification, digitalization, rock support, construction chemicals, and aftermarket services. Normet remains a private company headquartered in Finland. Available reference material describes a global organization with more than 1,800 professionals, over 50 locations, and operations in approximately 30 countries. Its current business model is built around integrated underground-work processes and long-term customer support rather than the sale of standalone machines alone.
