Overview
The Norfolk Arms Public House is a pub, restaurant and inn located in the remote Peak District village of Ringinglow on the outskirts of Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England. It sits on the old Sheffield to Buxton turnpike road and has served travellers since the early nineteenth century, when it provided beer and beds for those crossing the moors. Today it operates under the same name and continues to combine a traditional pub with food, drink and accommodation. The modern Norfolk Arms serves cask ales and home-cooked food to walkers, cyclists, climbers and families visiting the surrounding countryside. Its kitchen opens for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with menus that include cooked breakfasts, light bites, vegan and gluten-free options, and pub classics such as beer-battered fish, gammon, burgers and chilli. A weekend takeaway menu is also offered. The pub has thirteen recently redecorated en-suite bedrooms, including luxury and superior rooms, with views over Sheffield, the Mayfield Valley or the Peak District. Beyond food and lodging, the Norfolk Arms is a venue for weddings, parties, conferences and corporate events. The Mayfield Room can host up to 85 delegates, expanding to around 160 guests with the marquee, while the smaller Fulwood Room suits meetings of two to fourteen people. The Mayfield extension has long been a concert room and still hosts a weekly live jazz session. The pub also features log fires, a beer garden and an extensive whisky collection, and it is a popular destination on snowy days for sledgers, skiers and snowboarders. The business is independently run and is not part of a large pub chain. It is led by Michael and a hospitality team, and it actively recruits front-of-house, events, kitchen and night porter staff. Its website presents it as a countryside retreat that aims to be one of Sheffield's top venues.
History
The Norfolk Arms was built in the remote Peak District village of Ringinglow in the early nineteenth century. At that time it served as a pub with beer and beds for weary travellers on the Sheffield to Buxton turnpike road. Travellers would refresh themselves with food, drink and sleep before continuing their journey, after paying their dues at the neighbouring Roundhouse roll booth. A photograph of the pub from around 1905 shows it during the proprietorship of Ernest Priest Close. Over the following decades the Norfolk Arms evolved from a simple coaching inn into a modern hospitality venue while retaining its historic role as a stopping point for people exploring the moors. The Mayfield extension, which has served as a concert room for as long as locals can remember, was re-developed in the 1950s and became one of Sheffield's best-loved events venues, hosting weddings, birthday parties, conferences and funeral receptions. It still hosts a live session from the Jazz Preservation Society every Monday night. In 2007 the pub's thirteen en-suite bedrooms were re-developed, upgrading the accommodation for everyone from newlyweds to commuters seeking peace and tranquillity. The modern Norfolk Arms serves a similar purpose to its historic predecessor, offering real ale refreshment to walkers, cyclists and climbers who frequent the area, as well as home-cooked food for families enjoying a day in the country. It also provides corporate hospitality, meetings, conferences and team-building facilities, with the Fulwood Room for two to fourteen guests and the larger Mayfield Room for up to 85 delegates, expandable to around 160 guests with the marquee. The pub is independently run and led by Michael and his team. It continues to trade as a pub, restaurant and inn, and has been recruiting front-of-house, events, kitchen and night porter staff as part of efforts to establish itself as one of Sheffield's top venues.
