Overview

Nordcapital GmbH (stylized NORDCAPITAL) is a Hamburg-based emissions house (issuer) and asset manager for closed-end funds. Founded in 1992 by Erck Rickmers and his brother Bertram Rickmers, both members of the shipbuilding and shipping family Rickmers, the company grew into one of Germany's leading providers of closed-end ship funds. From 1992 to the end of 2015, Nordcapital invested approximately €6.8 billion across 140 closed-end funds. Its largest business area is ship financing; in 2011 it was the largest provider of closed-end ship funds in Germany by placed equity, placing €87.4 million of equity that year. Nordcapital structures and places closed-end funds for private and institutional investors, covering shipping, real estate, private equity, renewable energy, energy supply and secondary-market funds. It also provides asset management for third-party fund providers and investor services through Nordcapital Treuhand. In 2014 it became a registered capital management company (KVG) for alternative investment funds (AIF). In January 2008 the business was restructured under a holding company, E.R. Capital Holding, which grouped three operating companies: Nordcapital, the shipping company E.R. Schiffahrt and the fund house equitrust. In 2020, the investment manager QUEST Funds took over Nordcapital's real estate fund portfolio, comprising 15 funds with office properties in Germany and Benelux, around 265,000 m² and an investment volume of €1.2 billion. Nordcapital remains headquartered at Warburgstraße 50 in Hamburg.

History

Nordcapital was founded in 1992 by Erck Rickmers and his brother Bertram Rickmers, members of the Rickmers family whose shipping company has been active in shipbuilding and seafaring since 1834. In 1996 Bertram Rickmers left Nordcapital, and Erck Rickmers led the company alone from then on. In 1998, the shipping company E.R. Schiffahrt emerged from Nordcapital, initially focusing on the operation and chartering of container ships. In January 2008 the company was restructured: under the umbrella of a holding company, E.R. Capital Holding, Rickmers formed three operating companies: Nordcapital, E.R. Schiffahrt and the fund house equitrust. From 1992 to the end of 2015, Nordcapital invested approximately €6.8 billion in 140 closed-end funds. Its largest business area is ship financing.
