Overview
The Nordbayerischer Musikbund e. V. (NBMB) is a registered association and the largest music association in Bavaria, Germany. Founded in 1952 as the Fränkische Musikbund and renamed in 1958, it represents more than 45,000 musicians organised in over 900 music clubs, wind orchestras and other ensembles across the administrative regions of Middle Franconia, Upper Franconia, Lower Franconia and the Upper Palatinate. The NBMB is a member of the Bayerischer Blasmusikverband, the Bayerischer Landesverein für Heimatpflege and the Bayerischer Musikrat. The association's origins lie in the post-World War II period, when former military musicians sought to earn extra income through music and, due to denazification rules, required permission from the occupying authorities. In 1948 a union of so-called "Nebenberufsmusiker" (part-time professional musicians) was founded in Bamberg; this became the Fränkische Musikbund in 1952 and adopted its current name in 1958 to include the Upper Palatinate wind bands. The first president was Oberstabsmusikmeister a. D. Georg Heinlein. Subsequent presidents include Georg Bayer (from 1963), Dr. Adolf Eichenseer (from 1984), Manfred Ach (from 2003) and Manfred Ländner (from 2009). The NBMB organises its members into four districts (Middle, Upper and Lower Franconia and the Upper Palatinate), which are further divided into 30 circles. Each circle has a circle orchestra, and each district has a district orchestra. The association's youth organisation is the Nordbayerische Bläserjugend, a member of the Bayerischer Jugendring. Its top representative ensemble is the Nordbayerisches Jugendblasorchester (NBJBO), which has won international competitions such as the Flicorno d'Oro and regularly performs at the Akustika in Nuremberg. Other ensembles include the Nordbayerisches Spielleuteorchester (NBSO, founded 1982) and the Nordbayerische Brass Band (NBBB, founded 2012). The NBMB offers a range of services to its members, including musician performance badges (Junior, D1 Bronze, D2 Silver, D3 Gold), courses and further training, and competitions such as Concertino (solo/duo and chamber music) and Concerto (middle and upper level, and wind class competition). It also advocates for its members' interests, provides grants and support, and publishes news and event information. The association is led by a president, five vice-presidents and a federal conductor, with a managing director appointed by the presidium. As of the evidence, the president is Manfred Ländner and the managing director is Andreas Kleinhenz.
History
The Nordbayerischer Musikbund e. V. (NBMB) traces its origins to the post-World War II era. After 1945, many former military musicians sought to earn extra income through music, but due to denazification regulations they needed permission from the occupying authorities. In 1948, a union of so-called "Nebenberufsmusiker" (part-time professional musicians) was founded in Bamberg. In 1952, this union was renamed the Fränkische Musikbund. The first president was Oberstabsmusikmeister a. D. Georg Heinlein from Bamberg, who initially also held the office of federal conductor and was responsible for training. In 1958, to accommodate the Old Bavarian Upper Palatinate bands that had joined, the name was changed to Nordbayerischer Musikbund. From 1963, Georg Bayer from Marloffstein led the association; he remained honorary president until his death in 2007. His successor in 1984 was Dr. Adolf Eichenseer from Regensburg, who was also honorary president until his death in 2015. From 2003, Manfred Ach from Margetshöchheim took over the leadership, and in 2009 he was succeeded by Manfred Ländner from Kürnach. In 1982, the Nordbayerisches Spielleuteorchester (NBSO) was founded by Günther Katzenberger as a select orchestra for fife and drum corps. In 1988, the Nordbayerisches Jugendblasorchester (NBJBO) was founded, led from the beginning by federal conductor Ernst Oestreicher. In 2012, the Nordbayerische Brass Band (NBBB) was founded under the direction of Mathias Wehr. In the late 1980s, the NBMB developed initial plans for a youth organisation in which young musicians could unite and pursue common goals of youth work and youth welfare. The Bayerischer Jugendring in Munich approved after lengthy negotiations, and the Nordbayerische Bläserjugend was established as the youth organisation of the NBMB. Today, the NBMB is the largest music association in Bavaria, representing over 45,000 musicians in more than 900 member clubs and institutions across Middle, Upper and Lower Franconia and the Upper Palatinate. It is a member of the Bayerischer Blasmusikverband, the Bayerischer Landesverein für Heimatpflege and the Bayerischer Musikrat. The association continues to offer a wide range of services, including musician performance badges, competitions, courses and youth work, and it advocates for the interests of amateur wind music in the region.
